Recording with 3 signals

I am thinking of trying out 3 signals for my studio stuff coming up.

Bass - direct
Bass - Sansamp BDDI w/EQ - tube compressor (to smooth out the highs)
Bass - Mesa Bass 400 - Powerhouse Cab - mic

The direct bass signal has a certain growl to it that I like, the Sansamp has my more aggressive slap tone, the amp has the low mids bump and tube richness to it.

The plan would be to find the best blend of these signals for the mix.

Anyone think it's over the top to try this out?

No. If it sounds good go for it. Last time I recorded I used 4. My pre-amp (Ampeg SVP-BSP) has a line out for both clean and dirty channels. I miked my cab and I used a D.I. For each song we adjusted the blend of all four and came up with a unique bass sound for each song. So if it works and you like the sound go for it. I've also recorded with just a mike on my cab and a DI. So whatever works.
