Recording the band..

Sign in to disble this ad
We want to record a couple of tracks, nothing too fancy. I have access to a Boss BR-600 digitial 8 track and a Soundcraft M4 mixer, which has a digital (SPDIF?) output as well as the normal analogue outputs. What is the best way to setup everything to record the band? We are 2 guitars, bass drums and vocals x 2...

Yikes. There may not be enough space on the server to answer you with! There are tons a ways to do this.

What is it that you want? analysis of your music? A demo? Website clips?

For demos and some album work I am a fan of live rhythm section recording whenever possible. I'm assuming that the input of your recorder is set up to accept the USB output of your mixer. Isolate the amps as much as you can, make some gobos out of foam to put around the kit, get the best mics you can and start experimenting.

Well, without drums isolation, you're gonna get bleeding through the mic/mics. I suggest a stereo mic setup/direct recording to a unit like the Zoom H2/H4 or similar units. Your recorder is fine. Just setup 2 mics and record in stereo. Setup the mics in front of the band and P.A.

Just looking to create a demo. So use mics rather than any direct instument inputs via the mixer?

If you can isolate the drums, then go direct and do vocals after. If you don't have the capacity to isolate, then go to the stereo mic/live setup. Just my opinion.

This was done using the Zoom H2.
