Recording DI and Mic

Sign in to disble this ad
I've heard of this being done more and more. I wanted to try it out.
I usually just record into the board and process it how I like in Reaper after, but my guitarist bought a bunch of mic's and wants to go for a more analog approach (quick and dirty). I'm fine with this but would like to mix my mic'd sound with a DI line. Would I have to play through the songs twice or could I split my signal somehow to send into my amp and another into the DI box->board? I'm drawing a blank and my brain hurts.

I've done it - and usually you wind up leaning heavily one way or the other in mixing. Lately I've been preferring all mic, but you need a good recording amp.

There no one right way to record, but be aware that when you blend a mic and a DI, you frequently will run into phasing issues. I had better luck in shelving out the higher stuff on the DI and the lower stuff on the mic when going for a "blended" sound. It's not actually a crossover, but the result is similar.
