Recording help

I'm recording an audition tape right now.
I cannot get myself to sound good on the recording. Which is important for an audition.
Its the timing. The playback sounds (to my ears) uneven, like a 12 year old did it. (Not to harsh on talented young folks.)
But while I'm recording it, it sounds dead-on with the original track. It frustrates me that it sounds fine with the original track, but the playback sounds uneven. I do a lot of live work and almost always sound dead in time, but this recording is just messing with my head. I've played much more complex stuff live and in the studio, but this solo bass track won't sit right.
What might be causing this/how can I fix it?

Without knowing what software you have...you may need to tweak the latency settings if it sounds uniformly behind the beat.
