Recording problems

My bands are trying to record using my brand new lap top that i got for xmass however when ever i try to play back the bass or the guitar it sounds like white noise and garbage. I tryed 2 programs and 2 different thing to record (a direct cable and a Rock Band Wii Mich). I could use some helo fixing this problem. Thanks

gonna need some more info on your setup and equipment. DI box, interface, etc..

I'm assuming you're trying to just run into the mic input. The signal your sending is probably most definitely clipping the input. You need an interface or mixing board to be able to control the gain and level of the instrument coming in. The latency of your signal is probably all messed up. Directly inputing into the computer is making the computer sound controller compute the signal and that causes a lag between playing and the computed signal. Probably time to invest in a mixer or mbox or similar.

ok im sry i just saw the recording title so i thought this was the place. I am pluging it directly into the computer throught the mike port.
