Recording Software

Can somebody give me the lowdown on music recording software? What are the most popular programs being used today, do I need any additional hardware to use the program? What does my system require for sound devices and such? I'd like to record some bass clips/songs, but don't know much about it. Any input is appreciated.

Hi, i'am as new as you, but 3 days ago i found the software called Audacity, it is a FREE software that lets you record and edit stuff, but my problem right now it's to eliminate noise without sacrify the bass sound, i just have the soundcard that came with the mainboard and a hub that adapts my bass cable to the computer (1/4 for bass to 1/8 to pc), hope it helps

I also downloaded Audacity this afternoon, haven't had a chance to check it out yet, though. Is there a lot of noise/hiss when recording this way? My computer is a newer model, not sure of the music hardware on it though. I do have the 1/4" to 1/8" adapter.

I originally meant to post this in The Recording Techniques forum, is there any way that I can move this, or does that have to be done by a moderator?

Audacity is a good start to see if you'll like recording.
I've used Tracktion ofr 3 yrs and like it.

after using pro tools le for a few years i starting using tracktion last year and LOVE IT. a lot more intuitive, and a better GUI.

I've been using Cubase SE myself, up to 48 tracks of audio, unlimited MIDI and supports up to 16 VST instruments and/or effects for all of $99. Very good entry level package and doesn't need proprietary hardware to go with it. Sonar is very good software too.

Pro-Tools is now partnered with M-Audio so they have some more affordable versions of Pro Tools and interfaces available as well as the regular high-end Pro Tools.

I've heard mixed reviews on Tracktion, some really love it, others had a lot of difficulty with it not being as intuitive as they hoped.

People who start on Tracktion seem to love it (which I did), some who started with other software have more issues with it, but most all agree it's one of the easyist to learn.

+1 for cubase, though I use the SX version.

definately the best recording software I've ever used on a PC. logic ftw overall though, but it's just for macs. which is a shame in my case.
