It must have been mentioned a million times in this thread and others, but listening to it again just now confirms to me that "Havona" by Jaco with Weather Report is still the closest to a perfect performance on our instrument that you can get. Yes, I know how it was recorded - so what, really? Doesn't matter.

I honestly don't think this could ever be bettered.

PS - John Wesley Harding - very sparse, very good bass. There is only Dylan's voice, guitar and harmonica, drum and bass. Nothing overdone, just right, and yet, Jimi Hendrix was able to hear in between the lines and took 'All Along the Watchtower' from here and ran with it.
