Personally I voted pre-Californication, as I really don't like much of their more recent stuff. I think that Blood Sugar Sex Magik is by far their best album, and their new stuff really isn't up to scratch - where has the groove gone?

They were definitly better before BSSM, no question. I was a huge fan when I was younger, but as I expanded my music collection, I discovered that many of their grooves were stolen. I had no idea they "borrowed" so much. I still like much of their original stuff, but , I've lost alot of respect for them as creative people. I've been thinking of compiling a list of their thievery...it must be at least 20 songs.

I loved the old stuff.. But the new stuff is ok. As far as them ripping people off i have never lost any respect for them because of it. I always thought it was cool that they thought of those old tunes to cover.

Pre-californication for me, BSSM and Mother's Milk are such iconic albums. but I don't mind their more recent popy side, they just took another path and that's cool. I think RHCP are more than just about funky groove and punk attitude. They are still very creative and a tight unit.

Maybe also, I'm getting old... But for me, when RHCP is gone, BSSM and MM is what I'll remember them for the most.

I like all of their phases. But if I had to choose, I'd take their pre-Californication years.

I don't like them, but I'd rather listen to Californication than anything else...and then go back from there.

I had no idea either, but I'd be interested in that list.

I think Californiacation is their best full album. They've had a few good songs after that, but only about 3-4 on BTW, and SA.

I think the pre-Cali albums were the definition of the RHCP "sound"... but i think now they have matured musically. I'm also wondering if they're starting to run out of ideas...

They put on a good show this Wed here in Milwaukee. I feel that Flea is losing it... no big deal anymore. Chad Smith and John Frushante are taking over the show....

Oh yeah, I got to meet Chad Smith and hang out in his VIP room...

I prefer their newer stuff.
I love the playing in the recent concerts (e.g. http://music.aol.com/videos/live-con...-chili-peppers )

I prefer the last 3 albums as opposed to their earlier work.

I think they're about the same as quality goes, but they're nearly a different band musically.

i believe the music they make now is more targeted than ever before, many of the new songs from the latest album go to well with a laguna beach episode.

That's a pretty bold claim. Care to back it up?

Here are a few borrowed songs I remember. There were a couple off of one of Gabriel's early albums also(maybe scratch or melt?). I'm going to work on this list, I wanna see it for myself. This is something I've noticed over the last few years. As I'm reminded of them, I will write them down. They have some great original stuff also, so please dont think that I've completely given up on them, I still occasionally throw on uplift mojo, mother's milk, or BSSM.

Definitely pre-Cali. BSSM is my favorite, even though Frusciante is on that CD. I liked Hillel MUCH better as a guitarist (and I liked Navarro as well).

I definately like the way RHCP are moving. They're still creative and finding new directions in stead of playing the same old tricks over again. I really like the sound of the newer albums as opposed to the older. I think RHCP are rocking more than ever. Maturing can be good for you!
