Reel Big Fish Tone

Anyone know what setup/techniques the bassist from Reel Big Fish(I admittedly dont even know his name, but still love the band) used on the "Turn the Radio Off" album. His tone sounds so cool throughout the album, especially on tracks like "Skatanic" and "I'll Never Be". Thanks.

That would be Matt Wong. He usually plays an Ampeg SVT of some sort into an 8x10 with a 5 string EB Musicman. It's the staple setup of the OC Ska scene (Bill Uechi from Save Ferris and Starpool uses the same setup and sounds a lot alike - great guy). Neither of them use picks, it's all fingerstyle for what I've seen.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=SSuEMJ_48YE - should give you at least a glimpse of what he does, he's normally pretty quiet and just plays in the background.

I myself went through an army of basses and amps and settled on the Ampeg/Musicman combo because it works so well for the music (and because I heard Matt Wong).

Thanks, I guess I could have just youtubed it to find out in the first place. He normally just sits back in the mix but on those tracks I mentioned hes very much in the forefront with that awesome tone.

all I know of his technique is every time I see him in show he faces away from the crowd looking at his amp. kinda boring to see.

I think that this is one of the reason he's so underrated. Matt has no clue how good he is! Amazing player. As solid as a marble slab! Touring with them was the most fun I'd had. He's gotta be in the top 10 of coolest guys on the planet.
