Can someone recommend me some good reggae bands? I have heard of almost all songs by Bob Marley (Punky Reggae Party is my favorite although not many people have it or have heard of it...), almost everything by Bob's 12 kids (Stephen, Damien, Ziggy, etc)... I like Third World too, but only a few of their songs (Reggae Ambassador). I tried UB40, did NOT like them at all.
Thanks all!

check out the aggrolites!! They play 'dirty reggae' which is like, up tempo reggae from late 60's 1970ish . http://youtube.com/watch?v=m2nlzwXUttY
the slackers, west bound train, hepcat are all great newer american jamacian revivalist ska / reggae bands.
Great band from brittan is Steel pulse, if you like third world(check out a bunhc more of their stuff) you will really like them.
Morgan heritage is really good.
Dennis Brown is probably one of the best/most influential reggae artists besides bob marley. he is considered the "crown prince of reggae".
Can't forget about the great Alton Ellis. This music is also considered "rocksteady" and "lovers rock" precursor to the real reggae movement.
Get yourself a copy of The Congos - Heart of the congos.
anything by Augustus pablo.
Learn about Dub, find some music by king tubby, Scientist, mad professor, lee "scratch" perry.
Everything by Barrington Levy .... imo essential reggae and reggae dancehall .
John Holt is a great singer.
So is Freddie Mcgregor, i saw both of these fellas play with an ochestra... amazing.
One of my favorite groups of all time..., the mighty diamonds http://youtube.com/watch?v=XC7CatrXWUs http://youtube.com/watch?v=6mgX_rvdDQM
this is a must watch for reggae fans... some legendary reggae musicians (earl chinna smith, Earl Flabba hort, horsemouth, robbie lynn). http://youtube.com/watch?v=stHRzsBnCnc
Look up "studio one" in youtube.
these are all a good foundation for your reggae expeience... so much reggae out there i find new stuff every day...
don't worry about not liking UB40, thats pretty common..

Buju Banton
Sizzla
Capleton
Damian Marley
Lone Ranger
Burro Banton
Anthony B
Fantan Mojah
Natural Black
Chuck fenda
these just some of my favorites.
Get Familiar with Riddims. You'll notice, most artists share many songs. common ting.
for instance, say Jackie Mittoo(check him out) put out a hit, others would version it.
theres a whole sub-culture of Versionist, Reggaedubwise.com is a good community of that.
So some classic riddims you can find albums of, and will expose you to many many artists are:
Queen Majesty riddim
Hot milk
Queen of the Minstrels
Truth and rights
Cuss cuss
Love me forever
M16
Stalag(baddest riddim of all time)
Sleng Teng
full up
throw me corn.
enjoy

Look for anything backed by Sly and Robbie or Roots Radics. |

I think Real Rock is the leader as far as number of songs. Can't argue with Stalag as your favorite. What a wicked piece of sound! |

It will teach you many classics old and new as well as give you some stylistic pointers. Hey Drifta, I found a tab of the Stalag 17 riddim on that French based reggae tab site. It doesn't seem right to me. I wondered how you (specifically) played it. We play a version of "Ring the Alarm" (less like Tenor Saw and more like Sublime, to my dismay) And we play it on B ending on A. I'm sure we don't play it "right" either. It seems relatively simple, but sometimes simple doesn't mean easy to figure out. |
