| On October 15, 2010, Chad Smith said in an interview that the new album would be out by next summer, although the band hopes that they will have it finished in time to be released by March 2011. Smith also said that the band already has festival dates booked for the summer of 2011. Finally, the drummer stated that the album will not be a double album compared to Stadium Arcadium, and that the group has tracked about 20 songs already. [70]
On October 16, 2010, the band's record label, Warner Brothers, announced that they are looking into taking legal action against pop singer Diana Vickers, claiming that her song "My Wicked Heart" sampled the bridge melody from the Chili Peppers hit song "Under The Bridge" without permission from the band or the label. Vickers claims that she was listening to "Under The Bridge" when she wrote her song but thought nothing of it at the time.[71]
The Red Hot Chili Peppers: An Oral/Visual History was released on October 19, 2010. The coffee table book is the first and only official book to be released by the Chili Peppers and was co-written by longtime friend, Brendan Mullen though Mullen passed away before his work on the book could be completed. The book features over 300 photos and a full history of the band through their own words. The book also features reflections and words from past band members, friends and those directly involved with the band since the beginning.[72]
In an October 26, 2010 interview with Spin Magazine, Chad Smith talked about how the band is experimenting with some Afropop styles of music which was inspired by a vacation that Flea and Josh took to Nigeria and Ethiopia. Smith stated "that music just moves to a different groove, it's not your typical Western four-four. The rhythms are so infectious." Smith said that the next record would not be a full-on Fela Kuti rip but the band is doing their own take on that sound.[73]
During an interview in November 2010, Smith announced that the band hoped to have the next album out by May or June 2011 and also that the band would play the 2011 Summer Sonic Festival, which will be held August 7–8 in Japan.[74] On November 17, 2010 it was officially confirmed that Red Hot Chili Peppers would be one of the headlining bands playing Rock in Rio, to be held in Rio de Janeiro, September 24, 2011. This date is the 20th anniversary of the release of their album Blood Sugar Sex Magik.[75]
On January 13, 2011, Smith announced that the album will be released in June 2011. [76] |
