Richard Bona New album Munia (the tale)

I bought this album this monday "by accident".

I walked in a music store and I heard the music, I liked it a lot, so I asked what was playing. I thought it was youssou n'dour.

But they told me that it was Richard Bona. I was supprised, I never heard bona's solo stuff. I didn't expect that.

So I bought it.

I like it a lot!!

I know I'm a little late but thanks for the info. I'd like to pick up some solo Bona...

CD Universe has this one, 'Tiki' and 'Toto Bona Lokau'. Anyone familair with these? I'm looking for somthing interesting, well crafted, tasteful and good sounding and not so much for Bona''s chops, blistering 16th notes, etc.

I dig Bona but I've never listened to much of Bona's solo stuff, where should I start? Where will I find plenty of good tunes and blistering 16th note runs?

Any...and all...of the above! You will find very little "because I can" on Bona's solo albums. Just wonderful tunes and some of the most amazing phrasing you'll hear on any instrument.

I've got all four of his albums (Scenes From My Life, Reverence, Munia: The Tale, and Tiki) and Reverence is far and away my favorite. Great somber tunes, and his African themed songs don't have the afro-pop sheen so much as his later efforts. Also features IMO his best bass playing and Gil Goldstein's masterful string arrangements. Not to mention Keith Jarrett, Vinnie Coliauta (sp?), Pat Metheny and Michael Brecker!!!!

Reverence rules...

SFML is good, not as fully developed as Reverence, Munia is quite good but not on par with Reverence IMO, and Tiki didn't push the bar for me at all in any sense... the collaborative artists drag the record down (especially the rap part - ugh), and there doesn't seem to be much progression or maturation overall... Heck, maybe I'm alone with this one tho.
