So I've been on a more rock-and-roll kick lately and I'm looking for some band suggestions. I found the Hellacopters, but something the lyrics and the guys voice gets to me. That and every song sounds similar.

I've heard of classics (MC5, Jethro Tull, Who, etc) and some of the more popular newer stuff (QOTSA, Clutch, Mondo Generator, Hellacopters, Tomahawk, Big Business, etc).

I know about Stonerrock.com and it has a wealth of good stuff. It also has a bunch of tired crap that ripoff either Sleep, Sabbath, or Kyuss.

So anywho, what is your suggestion for a newer band that brings the rock and nothing but the rock?

It may be an acquired taste, but I can't get enough of Opeth.

It is an acquired taste. They were very much metal the last time I listened to them, have they starting playing rock?

Those are all old and tired man. I guess I didn't clarify, I'll edit the first post.

Modern (it's popular lately to call this Stoner) rock and roll without a billion drug references, that doesn't cater to the jam band or teenie bopper crowd, and that doesn't sound like a bad ripoff of Kyuss, Black Sabbath, or Sleep.

I listened to Little Johnny Jewel by Television. Didn't like it doesn't even describe it.

The Move was alright.

I'll basically say that what I'm looking for is a groovy, 70's inspired modern rock with big riffs and not the psych or punk type stuff.

Okay, I went searching and I found a few bands that I dig. Sponge, Emok, Zeke, and Hidden Hand are all cool.

But I'll leave this up for more suggestions.

Well, not just stoner, but modern ish stuff too.

Like the Hellacopters (uptempo rock) but without the "english isn't my native language" singing with too much reverb.

I don't really know.

Clutch, pretty positive you know about them but they do nothing but rock. If Kiss were a good band, they would be Clutch. But they aren't, so there's only Clutch. And Kiss sucks.

Unida, one of John Garcia's bands. Honestly I'd take them over Kyuss in a lot of ways. Well okay not in that one special way (the naughty place), but you know.

Dozer are pretty good, they did a split with Unida some years ago and have since gotten better from the few songs I've heard.

Firebird are getting good, I don't think Bill Steer can top his Carcass days but No. 3 was pretty rockin.

Jerry Cantrell released some of his best material in 2002, Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2 is one of the top albums I've heard in this decade. The single disc version is nowhere near as good.

Hammers of Misfortune, they are more toward the metal side but rock mightily. The Lord Weird Slough Feg in a similar fashion. This stuff is Iron Maiden for the bar circuit 2000's.

House of Aquarius. A bit psychadelic but with more emphasis on rockin' the hell out than someone like Electric Wizard.

Ummmmmmmmm... I'm listen to Zwan right now.

I started a similar thread a while back...maybe you'll find some stuff in there. Some of the bands I've been listening to a lot lately that bring the rock are:

sHeavy
Fireball Ministry
The Sword
Dozer
Karma To Burn
El Caco
The Bronx
Refused
Akimbo
Intronaut
Planes Mistaken For Stars
Colour Haze
Early Man
Melvins

And of course Clutch, which you already know about. They bring the rock harder than any right now...I'm anxiously awaiting their new album!!

Mostly stoner bands, i know...but there seems to be a ton of great rockin' stuff in that genre.

Solace, these dudes were really good. 13 kicks all kinds of ass, plus has a picture of hell on the cover (and therefore sounds better):

The Hidden Hand are AMAZING. Check out Spirit Caravan as well, and of course The Obsessed. Wino is like Lemmy but awesome instead of just supposed to be.

Anything Dax is involved with, Agents of Oblivion, Acid Bath, Deadboy and The Elephantmen etc. I think you know this stuff already.

Old Man Gloom, probably my favorite band in existence right now, I even like them over Isis. A lot of experimental noise, but a lot of RAWK as well.

Colour Haze, might be too retro for some but I can't get enough of them.

Still listening to Zwan.

I've got every piece of Clutch I could lay my mits on. I'm amazed they continue to just get better.

I'm not a John Garcia fan, I liked Kyuss' music, but his voice was the dealbreaker with that band. Brant Bjork's (drummer of Kyuss) music is the same way.

Dozer, hell yeah. I've got Rings of Saturn on vinyl.

I heard Firebird when there was a buzz about them and I didn't hear much that I hadn't heard better somewhere else, but I give them a spin.

Jerry is always money. I liked Fairweather Fan or whatever it was and I was a AIC fanboy in the late ninties. I'll definitely check out more of his solo stuff.

Thanks nad.

Ah that's right, you don't dig on Garcia's vocals. Well, Unida still might be worth checking out, that dude is a riffmeister.

Dirt = Jerry's second album >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Jerry's first album

Seriously. It's that good.

Oh man, I saw these dudes open for Isis last week, they blew me away! That bassist is something else, melodic fretless lines in grindcore context, freakin' cool.

Also I think I heard Planes Mistaken for Stars recently and was impressed. Mostly by their name, but the music was good, too.

I'm pretty obsessed with Mastodon lately.

Blah blah blah.

I dig the Sword for the same reason I like Candlemass. Good music with lyrics and delivery so corny they're great.

Shape of Punk to Come is a favorite album of mine. Toasted hipped me too them a couple years ago. Great band.

In the greater context of all things amazing stoner, Ad Astra is junk.

Everyone says that is one of those Be All, End All of the genre albums, but I've never liked anything but the first song (which is great). Other than that, it's a perfectly bland album.

Maybe I just don't "get" it though. *shrug*
