So the band I'm in is recording our first album.
In our music, I try to add a bit more complicated stuff on the bass. We play indie, and to my knowledge most indie bands have some really cool bass lines or just the tried and true root line.
We're in the studio, and I go to record the bass part I've written for a song of ours, and I get called in to talk with the guys helping us with our album. They told me basically that everything I was playing was good, but too flashy for the album. I was told to just ride on the root note. "Rock N' Roll Bass Lines" they called them. Keep it simple.
Which got me thinking...perhaps people somtimes play way too much for a song, like overthinking something. It sort of opened my eys a bit to my own style of playing, and that not all songs call for over-the-top bass lines. Being a fan of progressive music and the like, I alway thought about complexity and such. It was just a little lesson learning experience, that sometimes less really is more, and I thought I'd share that.
Cool.
