I want to record some soundclips but I'm not sure how to go about this. I have a way to connect my bass to my mic input but when I do nothing happens. Is there some software that I need? (I have windows 7 and windows media maker). Also woud running it through a USB port be better?

Did you check your soundcard mixer to be sure that your input/mic is not muted or turned down? I do that at home in a pinch and it works.

I have used the Line 6 backtracker that runs right into my laptop/pc and records .wav files. No software needed !

Buy sonar 6,7,8 home, studio or pro 99$ - 599$ and a good soud card.

You need a recording sofware that we may know like sonar, protools, Garage band etc... so we can help you.

No sound could be no input. make sure your in puts are on/activated.

I use my inbuilt soundcard and Audacity, and it all sounds good!

Try Stealthplug. Reasonable and it comes with some pretty cool software to get started with digital recording.

It says Win XP but I amd also running it on a DAW with Vista Ultimate with no issues, just gotta get the updated drivers from IK.
