I've heard a few Rush songs and like the band. I think Geddy's awesome. But I read that he liked to use magic instead of bass for his bass lines a lot. What are some of the albums in which he sticks mainly to his bass? Or, which have some of his best basslines? (Even if other songs use witchcraft)
I know Rush has put out a crapload of albums... I don't even know where to start... |

Thankfully, they also include ridiculously good bass playing and frighteningly good Wal tone. After you've got these, Roll The Bones, presto, Grace Under Pressure and Vapor Trails are also essential!
If you think he uses witchcraft...maybe you ought to sit and think about that for a while |

But if you're lookin for some CD's without synth, you MUST GET Fly By Night immediately, and 2112.

...certainly no magic there! Unless "magic" is a byword for "Wal". I've heard they're a bit good, apparently! |

Where the hell did you read that??
I've recently bought the Chronicles compo double CD. It's quite good, prob as good a starting place as any. It's informed me about which Rush albums I feel i'm gonna enjoy most.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that Geddy's voice becomes less annoyin the more you hear it. |

But I mean c'mon, nothing beats the ball clenching greatness that is the priests, of the temples of syrinx.

Magic/Witchcraft = synth. We can call guitar players all sorts of bad names but all other instruments are off limits?
Yes, I wanted albums where synths didn't dominate. I don't know much about Rush, but I just read that Geddy likes to use them a lot.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check out those albums. |

. | Well, you'll find that when you infer that one of the best modern bassist uses "witchcraft instead of his bass" most of us who know better might think it a silly question. If your intent is to insult Geddy's abilities, then expect people here to be "jumpy." If your intent is to ask a question about Rush songs that have less synth playing, then why not ask that question directly? |

Personally, I don't think there is a bad example of Geddy's playing...his tone just evolved with the use of different basses but he's always played essentially the same. I think the tonal changes almost corresponded exactly to the decades 70's, 80's, and 90's +

2112 is the last album Rush made before they introduced keys.
Vapor Trails is the first album they have made since they decided to move away from keys.
Interesting progression...

I just read that he liked to use synths a lot on some albums, whereas I want more bass playing. That is all. If it's not as bad as I think, then it's all good.
Basically, I'm trying to avoid And Justice For All...
Good album, but bass player MIA. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
