Listening to the song Clockwork Angles, and I do wander if Geddy used his rick on this one!!! I have both a Geddy and a 4003, and I know both can sound close.
But on this song there is some of the Ric growl and character that Geddy usually had on his Ric days and less of it on his Jazz days.
If it is not his Rickenbacker, then the sound tech had done fine job as his tone on the album is will I say better then anything I've heard form Geddy in the latest years.

But like in Moving Pictures, some tracks were recorded on a Jazz, some on a Ric, but still it was almost impossible to say which bass were used on which song.
In any case it seems like Geddy use less distortion as his tone here is more growly and less fuzzy then it used to be. |

I think it not a Ric, just a damn god Jazz tone.... Hmm, could be any of these 2 basses, there is some Ric tone in there...
Well, I will listen to the track again with my AKG701 and a proper heaphone amp... I also must pick up my Geddy and my 4003 to get some more reference...
Anyway, I think his tone on this track specially is much closer to Moving Pictures then ever in his latest Jazz era. Is it is his different Sansamp settings or is it the including of his Orange AD200 to his tone?? Or maybe he actually picked up a Ric again? |

Love his tone on this album, bring me back to early Rush tone! |

| | | | It's the Jazz. I read somewhere that he did consider using his Rick for this album, but decided to stay with the Jazz. It sounded 'better'.
Fortunately Geddy decided to use his Orange amps to record with too, hence the great tone. His bass sounded great on the Time Machine tour too. Orange again.
Gone is the Trace Elliot head. It makes ALL the difference.
Orange bass amps have always sounded great..... |

I hope this will clear it up for you. According to the new Classic Rock interview Geddy still used his 72 Jazz plus a "new" 72 Jazz he said he picked up which he said sounds "close" to his #1 and he used 2 other jazz basses as well. He is using the same Avalon, Palmer and Tech21 Sansamp RPM plus he is definitely using the Orange amps set to "destroy" his own words. He said he loved the overdrive he was getting from them. Hope this helps.
