I freakin love that record, but I dont hear much talk about it. Full of good songs and an amazing bass tone, probably my favourite tone of all the records.

I don't think it's that underrated, specially taking into account that "Counterparts" marks two turning points in Geddy's career: The return to his old Jazz Bass and first-time use of his now trademark flamenco-like one finger strumming technique. Great songs in that album, although I'm more a fan of their pre-Signals era.

Cut to the chase
alien shore
speed of love
animate
leave that thing alone

Those are my favorite on the album. They are all great, but I think the worst one is nobody's hero.

I'm hooked on presto right now.

I'm gonna vote for Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows as well, because it seems when Geddy started adding a lot of keys, a lot of progressive rock fans kind of turned away from them- which was a shame, because there are 3-4 really good songs on both of those albums.

I think that most of th disdain for Vapor Trails has more to do with the way it was recorded that the actual content. I agree it was a great album also....lately I have been rediscovering Presto and Roll The Bones...still trying hard to like the Wal era, but hard to get past the the lack of bottom end on those records...still great though.

From 70s era i would say Fly by Night is the most underrated. Incredible songs on that one.

Hemispheres and Presto are their most underrated albums.

Circumstances has an incredible bass line; it's even more amazing that Geddy is singing while he's playing that line!

Superconductor and The Pass are both terrific songs.

Counterparts is one of my favorites, too. Great album, IMO. I also like Roll The Bones.

The 90s stuff is all underrated, and it is all great. I'm trying to get a copy of test for echo, I'm sure it's a great one, too.

I must concur with the OP. I love every song on that CD.

My sentimental favorite since it was the one that made me "get" Rush. I remember the exact moment too. It was the drum break near the end of "Leave That Thing Alone". It bent my brain big time.

Oh boy...i remember when that one came out, i always have been into Rush, i love all the material but their sound on the Presto/Roll The Bones era didn´t appeal much to me (at the time) and i was kind of broadening my horizons, opening more to Zeppelin, Deep Purple (i didn´t know much about them) et al...then one day, i walk into the record store and there it is, the little sleeve with the bolt and nut, bought it in a nanosecond and rushed home, ripped the envelope as i rode the elevator and as was opening the door i had the CD in my hand, put it on the drawer of the Stereo i had (thank God it was a good one), pressed play and...one, two, three, four, one, two....

What a moment, few albums have had that kind of impact on me from the first listen, Neil charging with the sick rocking groove of Animate, the raw tubey sound that everything had, courtesy of Kevin "The Caveman" Shirley, i think i wore that copy out, pure unpolluted joy from one cut to the other...it´s my second favorite Rush album after Moving Pictures.

To the OP, thank you very much, remembering that stuff made my day.

This is why people hate it ... it has a really bad mix ... all of the songs are clipping ...

It's one of the most prominent exponents of the "loudness war". Check this thread I created about it some time ago.

I remember when that came out there was a radio interview with them talking about how they had become isolated in the control room and wanted to get back into the studio and just crank it and feel it. I believe it's Everyday Glory where Ged and the engineer (name esc's me) dragged-out an old tube bass amp that was barely alive and just poured everything through it and fried it for the sound. So, a bit more "organic" than some Rush albums, and a wicked tour behind it. Long Live Rush!
