| Since I've been learning some Rush songs on bass I've re-listened to all of their studio discography. I still can't sit through GUP, Power Windows, most of Presto (except for the song Show Don't Tell which has some killer basslines), Hold Your Fire and Roll the Bones.
The 1970's era was so awesome (up into Signals) that the rest of the 1980's was like it all went quiet and you can only hear the crickets.
Then I get to Counterparts, and like others have said, that first track slams headlong like a freightrain and it just rocks. My favorite is Double Agent, but I like some others. It feels like, creatively, they got some 1970's mojo back and drilled it into this album.
Surprisingly I really like Test For Echo, I like almost every track, very solid album. Except for the noise levels I also believe Vapor Trails is another excellent album, along with Snakes & Arrows.
One thing I will say is when I hear songs from the 1980's albums I mentioned that I can't get into, when some are played live, they sound way better. They just have more bite on stage, and were too 'clinical' on the albums.
