Russian Circles "Station"

This is my current favorite album. Great use of looping, amazing guitar tones from Sunn model T amps. Their old bassist was better, but they are still amazing. I extremely dissapointed I screwed up the date and missed them when they came to town, as I have never seen them live. For the uninitiated, they are a instrumental rock band from Chicago. The soundscapes and dynamics of the band are really lead by their fantastic drummer who makes me want to cry everytime I watch him play on YouTube.

Not everyone's come of tea, but if you are into Hydra Head records type stuff, check out Russian Circles

i saw them when they came thru sanfran and they blew me away. too bad those SUNN heads the guitar guys using are those darn Fenders...
i dont have a prob w/ the new bass guy-thought he had a very sturdy tone and knew his way around the fretboard.
my fav tune:

I don't know, those Sunn reissues made by fender are still really nice IMO.

I love the album. I personally prefer Brian Cook's bass playing to Colin's, as well as his tone. I've liked him all the way back through the These Arms Are Snakes days, so I was excited to see him with Russian Circles.

And more recently, pretty much no one in the band uses Sunn amps. They all use Emperor Cabs (custom made in Chicago), Brian uses an Emperor 4x12 and a 1x18 with an SVT-3, and Mike uses Emperor 4x12s with a myriad of boutique tube heads, including Divided By 13 amps. Everyone's tone in the group is fantastic, and very musical.

I enjoy how Brian bases his tone completely around his Fuzz tone with his Muff.

I personally don't like this new album compared to the old one at all. I like both bass players alot. but, the songwriting on the new album just seems to hit several pitfalls. It feels like it was rushed a bit, but who am I to judge.

personally, I am a big fan of dakota/dakota. They have the guitar player and old bass player from russian circles. It does lack the tight fatty beats from mr. turncrantz though.

I'm so glad I found a topic about Russian Circles! They're my favorite band. I actually like Brian Cook better, even though I love the other bass player too. I probably prefer Cook because I love These Arms Are Snakes and Botch. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the reason the new CD sounded so different was because the band was trying to go in a more melodic direction instead of the more heavy aspects of Enter. That's actually the reason the old bassist left.

Not to be a dick, but that isn't quite right.

The band wanted this to be the heaviest album they could possibly write, but it just never worked out that way. Every time they would try to write something epically heavy, they came out with something epically beautiful.

Colin did leave for musical I reasons, just not the ones you described.

It took me a long time to get into their newest album because of the weird bass tone on it. After listening to it several dozen times, it's now my favorite album of theirs. I prefer Colin's tone to Brian's. Anyone know what Colin used to record with on "Enter"?

Same here. This band is so amazing. Station is wonderful, as is Enter.

thats awesome to hear!

I'm listening to them as I type this! Has anyone else noticed that they make watching nature a million times better than it already is? I took a drive through a state park the other week while listening to station, and needless to say it made the experience a whole lot better!
