Searching for non-prog fretless bass music

Sign in to disble this ad
I've noticed that in my seach for good music that incorporates fretless electric bass, i have a hard time avoiding the prog-fusion stuff. Don't get me wrong, i love a lot of it (like jaco and percy jone's tunnels...when the damn midi vibes guy shuts up...) and I understand there are historical reasons for this... but must it AWAYS be this way?

Can someone point me to some fretless electric bass stuff that isn't all jock-progged out? Consider this... I hate Dream Theater .

I look forward to your recommendations.

Check out Kai Eckhardt on the Bill Douglas CD "Sky". It's mellow and meditative, but not exactly progressive. Sort of a world-jazz thing.

How about Bill Wyman and Rick Danko's fretless work for starters?

Anything with Tony Franklin.

I'd also check out some Pearl Jam. Jeff Ament used fretless on some pretty rocking tunes, not just the softer stuff. He's always been a big fretless influence of mine.

Black, Evenflow and Breathe are my favs, but I lost interest in them after a few albums, so there may be alot more examples by now.

I think David Jay of Bauhaus played a fretless P bass on everything. Looked and sounded great.

Wow, i never even thought to think if he used fretless... but that explains that "siren" type sound at the beginning and end of "double dare".

Sweet. I must look further into this.
