Seattle's forgotten funk scene '65-'75

Sign in to disble this ad
How on earth did I miss this?

Wheedles Groove is a documentary about the almost forgotten soul music happening in Seattle back in the day.
The film came out last year at the Seattle International film Festival.
Similar to the films Buena Vista Social Club and Standing In The Sahdows of Motown, it's part documentary and part revival concert.

There are ton of clips on you tube as well

official trailer
The Black on White Affair - Bold Soul Sister, Bold Soul Brother (vinatge track)
Annakonda (vinatge track)
Ron Buford-Chicken Tracks(Live at Bumbershoot 2010)
Sound Garden's Jesus Christ Pose -as Gospel!!!

many more you tube clips if you have the yen...

There are also 2 CDs availble :
a vintage 45 compilation and a
new compilation of tracks recorded by the original artists in 2009.

As a Jet City native and lover of old school soul basslines, this makes me very happy.

Another groovy band that originated from here; Ballin' Jack.
And a couple of those guys went on to the band War.
The guitar line in Young MC's Bust A Move was sampled from Balling Jack. My band owns '63 Fender the guitar amp that line was played through.
Lots of their stuff on youtube, I think they were a little ahead of their time by a few years.

I just had the pleasure of watching the Wheedle's Groove band play a lunchtime concert live in downtown Seattle at Westlake park , right outside my office. Their veteran status clearly shows, it was a ton o fun.

so I figured I'd bump this old thread. Please check out the links in the first post for some great old school funk.

Cool man! Glad to hear of this--just ordered it to rent from my local library. They only have the DVD so I will probably buy the accompanying CD.

Since I moved to the PacNW I have gotten even more deeply into a lot of the old music scenes from around these parts...Ventures, Kingsmen, Frantics, Sonics, etc. Great history in there. Some great bands. Love a lot of the instro rock from that period, but I also loves the funk.

A memorial thread bump.
Kearny Barton, the engineer on most of the recordings referred to in the first post, has passed away Jan 16 2012.

So cool, this kind of stuff is meat and potatoes to me, with the gravy.

Thanks! Love discovering scenes like this.
