Secret Pleasures: Musicians/Bands/Recordings You Like but Don't Readily Admit It!

Hey!

I was sitting here listening to my iPhone and noticed how much I was enjoying music from some artists that I don't openly admit to liking for whatever reason.

I thought: What a great idea for a thread!

Let's hear it - who do you secretly like? I'll go first:

1. Barry Manilow (that might get me banned from here);
2. Barbra Streisand (that will DEFINITELY get me banned);

Actually, Manilow's 2 AM Paradise Cafe" is an EXCELLENT album, and I'm VERY partial to Streisand's "The Broadway Album."

OK - dirty laundry aired. Who's next? Let's hear it!

I like a lot of stuff that many people of my 'age/gender/demographic/WHATEVER' usually don't(Celine Dion is a prime example)but I think it's weak to *not admit it*
BTW, you did.

More confessions... Yeah - I enjoy Britney's "I'm a Slave for You" and "Toxic", Sedaka's "Laughter in the Rain," and everything the Carpenter's ever did.

Alanis Morisette. Jagged Little Pill, (and acoustic version). It's not something I play with others in my car. I am equally slightly embarrsed admitting I have a bit of a crush on her....

Say what you may about her politics, her acting, her material, whatever aspect of her career you may choose to cast aspersions about -- and I don't necessarily disagree -- but it's impossible to listen to her sing when she was at the peak of her career and not admit that she has astonishing control of her instrument. Just mind-bogglingly good vocal chops.

+1

At her prime, Streisand had one of the best voices in music. Excellent control, range, power, lyrical interpretation... just a phenomenal voice.

I must be getting old, or just really unhip... I would put Peter Gabriel, Carly Simon, and The Mamasa and The Papas in my "cool" playlist. Oh well! haha

Adelle. Most of my friends hate her as an American Idol wannabe / Manufactured pop music hack. However, I think the girl actually has talent and can sing.

Early Suzanne Vega

I am on a Burt Bacharach and Herb Alpert kick right now. Any 60's adult contemporary (IE: E-Z Listening) music.

Like many Nashville players, these guys are 1-2 take musicians & their precision, clean lines and the mini-licks the producer let slide are what I listen for & try to emulate.

Carpenters, America, Carly Simon...stuff like that. The heavy-rotation stuff.

I also like Adele. She writes most her songs which is a big plus. She can sing and I like the fact that she doesn't try to fit into the "perfect body image" of a popstar. She is who she is and is comfortable with herself.

Some older stuff: Monkees, Bread, Carpenters, Little River Band, America, Three Dog Night, Elton John, Supremes (love the bass lines), Rick Springfield ( he writes some catchy hooks and is pretty good guitar player. I saw one of his concerts on television and the guy is a great entertainer, lots of energy).
