So what is Streisand at her best? Give me some pointers.

No one should be ashamed of listening to The Carpenters - that is high quality stuff right there done by people who could play.

Just mind-bogglingly good vocal chops.

I thought: What a great idea for a thread!

Let's hear it - who do you secretly like? I'll go first:

1. Barry Manilow (that might get me banned from here);
2. Barbra Streisand (that will DEFINITELY get me banned);

Actually, Manilow's 2 AM Paradise Cafe" is an EXCELLENT album, and I'm VERY partial to Streisand's "The Broadway Album."

OK - dirty laundry aired. Who's next? Let's hear it!
These kinds of threads are a bit of an enigma to me because I like what I like and truly do not care what anyone else thinks of it. I don't much care for Manilow but Barbara has one of the best voices ever. Her version of Stevie Wonder's 'All In Love is Fair' is absolutely beautiful, IMO. Similarly how can one not appreciate Karen Carpenter's beautiful voice?

I like dubstep. I'm not the stereotypical demographic for that style. I'm a child of the 60's and started playing in bands in the 70's. I think dubstep artists, even though they are using purely digital information, samples, sequences, Macbook Pros and Novastations, they think like real musicians and use tried-and-true pop song formulas like structure, hooks, beats, etc. I really like the better dubstep artists and have a ton of respect for what they do.

Amen.

Some of the best recorded pop vocal harmony of all time includes The Beatles, Eagles, Beach Boys, Queen, and The Carpenters.

As far as music it's hard to beat the Carpenters. Karen's voice and intonation are a thing of beauty. And Richard did arrangements and played the piano.

I can't imagine why anyone would be embarrassed by liking the Carpenter's music.

That's okay, I like it too, and I grew up an 80s prog rock fan, and still am into hard rock and prog.

Even worse, I find Nicki Minaj entertaining, although I won't go out of my way to hear her, when I am flipping radio stations I will stop if I hear her voice and it gives me a good laugh if nothing else.

Plus the fact that she upsets so many people on TB makes her worth the internet troll points alone.

My old friends look at me as if I need to go to a mental hospital, but the way I look at it you have to keep an open mind and a twisted sense of humor if you want to go on staying young at heart.

Some of those tunes are pure genius. "Goodbye To Love" is one of my all-time favorite songs, inspired by nothing more than a fictitious song title from a movie (a song that we never hear in the movie). And that fuzz solo at the end is killer.

Both Karen and Richard had uniquely textured smoky voices that were a perfect match, being siblings, and spot-on pitch perfect intonation. You take that into the studio and overdub each part three times, you've got this perfect little Carpenter choir of angels, a wall of impeccable harmony.

"Superstar" gets an honorable mention. "Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh baby..."

Again even if you weren't crazy about the song you'd have to admire the craftsmanship.

I sometimes like listening to the stuff that was popular on the radio when I was young, just for the nostalgia

Barbra Streisand's Guilty album has some great stuff on it. Not too long ago one of the singers from my corporate band and I were talking about how much we'd love to do the song "Guilty".

Hmmm - I really liked both Kesha's "Tik Tok" and Katy Perry's "California Gurls".

I'm not really ashamed of these anymore, but back in the eighties I would have been ostracized for listening to and enjoying Duran Duran and Hall and Oates. John Taylor had some nice chops and girls liked Duran Duran. T-Bone Wolk was an awesome master of understatement and groove and Daryl Hall can sing his a$$ off.

I recently downloaded the Carpenters "singles" album from Amazon. Got it for 0.99. Can't stop listening to it. Pristine production and great playing, not to mention Karen's great voice. I also listen to Streisand's Way we Were. Great playing by Carol Kaye.

Yep, no shame in the Carpenters. Her voice was just amazing. It's a cheesy superlative, and an inadequate description, but if ever a voice was angelic, it must have been Karen Carpenter's. A lot of really great songwriting too. Some of the best.
