In the recording studio typically they will get the greatest detail and dynamic range by using microphones with a large, very thin diaphragm. That diaphragm is vulnerable to damage from plosive sounds, so for vocalists they will put a pop shield in front. For aggro rappers they may put double thickness of pop filter. For extreme cases (including beatboxing) they will use a mic that is not so vulnerable, figuring the detail and dynamic range are less important than getting the track down without damaging anything.
Seriously though, get a dynamic mic from Shure or Audix. They are tough, perfect for rap/beatbox, and require no phantom power.
And as another guy mentioned above, it is very very common for condenser mics to require phantom power; the only exceptions I know of are ones that contain a battery pack.
