Self Powered Mic...huh?

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay, so I have a Digitech Jamman. I figured it would be cool to plug my mic into it then do some skat or beatboxing and then play over it, but no..not simple enough.

I guess i dont have a "self powered" mic..

Here is my mic, tell me if this is why i am not getting any sound.

So, if that one doesnt work, what would be a good one to get that would work? I'm not looking to spend a fortune..

Yes.
That one needs phantom power to work.
You could get a small preamp or mixer to run it through before entering the jamman.

If you want to beatbox, you will destroy the diaphragm on that condenser mic. My suggestion, Audix OM5. It's a dynamic mic, I have a couple of them that my band uses for vocals which also includes some beatboxing and it sounds awesome.

I suggest you sell the CAD and get the Audix or at least the Shure SM58 because the CAD is more of a studio microphone.

Most (if not all) condenser mikes need power. You need to get a dynamic. Can't go wrong with a good old Shure SM 57 or 58

In the recording studio typically they will get the greatest detail and dynamic range by using microphones with a large, very thin diaphragm. That diaphragm is vulnerable to damage from plosive sounds, so for vocalists they will put a pop shield in front. For aggro rappers they may put double thickness of pop filter. For extreme cases (including beatboxing) they will use a mic that is not so vulnerable, figuring the detail and dynamic range are less important than getting the track down without damaging anything.

Seriously though, get a dynamic mic from Shure or Audix. They are tough, perfect for rap/beatbox, and require no phantom power.

And as another guy mentioned above, it is very very common for condenser mics to require phantom power; the only exceptions I know of are ones that contain a battery pack.
