Unhappy Serious Funk

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey,

I've found that I really need some serious funk to learn, because, im a big metal-funk fan, and I know too much metal, less funk...so can you funkers out there give me some cool finger-style or slap funk that I could learn.

Thanks

BTW, no Chili Peppers, i know tons of that, same with Primus, i'm looking for some old funk possibly (ie. stanley clarke or something?)

Buy the Meter's "Funkify Your Life" 2-cd set. That's ALL you'd ever need. It don't get any funkier...

George Porter was already funky when those '70s cats were still makin' doody in their diapers.

Also check out James Brown's "20 Greatest Hits".

Trust me, as a child of the '70's, this thread ain't big enough to list ALL of the essentials. The groups everyone mentioned in this thread should point you in the right direction. If you don't get there after all of the suggestions in this thread, we may have to rethink our plans!

Are mudvayne really funk? I thought they were a pure metal band. Anyway, I would recommend Sly & The Family Stone, or Jamaroquai, especially the albums that Stu Zender played bass on.

You can't get any funkier than James Brown.

Yeah, try:
"Evil Vibrations" - Mighty Ryeders
"Fence Walking" - Mandrill
"Sing A Simple Song" - Sly & The Family Stone
"Holy Ghost" - Bar Kays
"Rumpofsteelskin" - Parliament
"Red Clay" - Freddie Hubbard
The reason why I picked those songs, is because NONE of them are slapped. I want younger players to learn that funky doesn't necessarily mean slapped. Fingers can be VERY funky!

Their first 2 albums are pretty good examples.

I can't top the list already up there, but here's a couple of other suggestions:
"If You Want Me to Stay" - Sly & The Family Stone
"Hyperactive" - Thomas Dolby

We're talking different Funks here

One of the things that might hit you if you go back to 60's/70's Funk is the fact that the bassline did not have to be frenetic or slapped, "Fencewalk" by Mandrill is a great example. A later tune by them would be "Peck Ya Neck" replete with a kazoo hornline(no joke). Check out early Kool & the Gang, too.

James Brown, back when I was growing up, seemed to put out one song badder than the other, every month

If what you seek is the lots of jumping around and a truckload of notes kind of Funk, you can still learn something from the masters

POD has some pretty "funky" stuff in their songs. Incubus is real good too.
