| Since no one has answered and if it's not too late...
Beginning session players in my area usually choose from this menu:
l. The same hourly rate as the engineer/studio gets.
2. $30-50 per tune depending on your confidence level.
3. $50-100 for the whole day with as many takes or punch ins as needed
and maybe a willingness to return for free (if you're close) to fix some little thing or two.
Be aware if you haven't recorded much, that listening through headphones
with enough constant attention to how hard or soft or even you're picking EVERY single note, reacting immediately to some little change in the arrangement you've not been made aware of, sight reading (maybe), etc. that it's a COMPLETELY different "animal" from performing. You'll feel a little "distanced" from the song as you're concentrating so hard, unless it's something you've rehearsed a million times with the other musicians on the track.
"Punch ins" (where the "tape" is playing back while you play along replacing
a mistake with the right note(s) is tricky business to get used to without some experience.
With that in mind...start cheap! :-)
A "big" album/CD is in the mind (imagination?) of the beholder.
If it's got a definite deal with a label or a contract guaranteeing promotion
and how it'll be carried out, etc. It's probably not so....big.
If it IS, you could also negotiate for "points", sharing in the profits from each unit sold but I'd get an entertainment attorney for that one.
Finally, you might trade some studio time for your own project in exchange for playing if the studio itself is hiring you rather than a musician.
Hope that helps some...
