Unlike the Slapasauruses of the 1970's generation, players like Sharay Reed seem to have really learned alot from gospel as well as James Jamerson and Anthony Jackson. I bet he liked Bernard Edwards too.
I think Derrick Hodge (Maxwell) and Adam Blackstone (Jill Scott & Al Green) are two other great examples of the newer generation's approach to r&b.

They are both proof of the great music you can make with modest production basses.
