How often have you heard a recording and been really impressed with tha tone & style of the bassist? Probably dozens & dozens yeah? Now, how many of those times have you been able to quiz the bassist about what he/she used and how they used it to get that tone? Probably not as often as you'd like?

So, about a week ago I came across the myspace page and recorded work of one of our fellow TB'ers. I was really impressed. Not just with the chops, but with the tone and quality of the work.

I asked a few questions regarding what bass/basses she used in a certain song and was really surprized with what she told me. 2 basses were used and one bass in particular was a make & model that I really never gave any cred to. Not sure why, but it was what it was. That bass in that track was just killer sounding.

Anyway, the experience and insight totally changed my opinion about this bass. For what its worth, it was an Ibby BTB.

My point? No, this is not a pulg for an Ibanez bass. My point is how it was an excellent opportunity to not only check out some cool tunes but to also be able to have a little Q&A regarding a recorded work (i.e. bass, effects, board, settings, compression levels, etc)..

Sooooooooo, any and all, if you have a track or two that you're really proud of (playing AND tone-wise), share a link to it. Be sure and mention what bass(es) you used and what all was in the signal chain. You might enlighten a few of us

Great idea for a thread.

The band I've played in for the past 3 years is in my sig. Unfortunately we won't be playing together anymore since we're all graduation, but it was fun and if it weren't for them I wouldn't even be playing bass.

The tunes are all from the same gig. We played at the the Sylvan Amphitheater for Washington DCs annual Big Band Jam. I was playing on my Spector Euro 4LX through some GK head and cabs they provided for us. Live and standing next to the amp, that head sounded TERRIBLE! The high freqs completely overwhelmed any real tone it could produce. I cut them to 0, boosted the bass to about 6.5, and the low and high mids to 7. It still sounded bad but I was able to deal. Surprisingly, when I listened to the mastered tracks (the ones that I have on my myspace) it sounded great so I'm happy with the tone. My playing on the other hand was more than a bit off because of a bunch of stuff so, while it may not be my best work I think it's decent.

My band's myspace link is in my sig. The studio recordings are with my Modulus Q5 and Boss Bass EQ ran direct into ProTools 8. If we had more time I would have tweaked things a little more, but I'm not complaining. I was especially happy with the tone in 'Evening with the Sun' at around 2:20 onward. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Here is the most recent thing i've recorded. The bass was recorded using a toneport gx running into Guitar rig 3 for the effects then into Ampeg svx. I prefer the clean tone of the ampeg software, much more punchy.

Bass is a stock Peavey Millenium BXP.

This is also the first song i tried to do a beat that varied througout the song, I hate programming beats! All parts recorded by me! enjoy

Do check them out. Very cool guys.

I have 2 recordings I'm most fond of. "Inventions Mother" is a piece that I put together with the help of Dave Frank (sax player from the aforementioned Harrison Fjord). Check it out here - http://www.myspace.com/scratchjenkins For that tune, I used a Warwick Streamer Jazzman 5 fless. Ran it into an Aguilar DB900 and used a little Fulltone Bass Drive.

The other tune I am really digging these days is one from my band A Penny Found. Check us out here - http://www.myspace.com/apennyfoundmusic The song is "Where Did You Go". I used a custom triple pup LEJ 4 (thanks Brian). I ran it through the Aggie DI again and then straight into the board.

Let me know what you think
