I thought this would be a cool thread for sharing performance recordings, as opposed to studio demos or whatnot. I just found this lurking on my hard drive, recorded about 3 years ago.

Bass playing and sound quality are nothing special, but it just struck me as having a good groove to it that was fun to play (and listen to, I hope). Your thoughts and criticism are welcome, as always. Whaddya say?

Let's hear yours!

Hey Bill, what a terrific live performance! I'm not much of a dancer, but couldn't stop tapping my foot because of the groove! I really enjoyed it and would love to have such a great quality live recording of my band.

Anyway, here's my modest contribution. Recorded at my town's most important concert hall in early 2005. I uploaded that video to YouTube on August 1st 2009 to honor the memory of the pianist, my friend Jesús Alberto "Chucho" Rey, who died in his sleep that day (I created this thread as well). I chose this video because among the live ones I have, it's the only one with direct from board audio, so it has a decent sound quality. BTW, and before someone asks, I haven't played many different double basses in my life, but at least on mine I can hear a very percussive "thud" when I use the standard pizzicato technique. I found it very inappropriate for that piece, so that's why I'm plucking the strings with an upward motion in that video.

Loved the recording, Bill. Thanks for sharing it!

P.S.: I've uploaded several live band videos to a YouTube channel I have for that purpose, but most of them have a poor sound quality because of the camera's live audio track. Anyway, you can check them out if you like:

Those ones with "Orquesta Rey & Rey" in the title are live performances with my tropical music band (Salsa, Merengue and Bolero). The ones with "Lobbuck Lou" in the title are from a rock band I used to play with. "Alfredo De La Fe en Bucaramanga" is an excerpt of a two-week old performance accompanying a famous Salsa violinist.

Alvaro, I really like that piece "Baroque and Blue", especially the swinging jazz waltz sections - very, very cool. Your playing suits the music absolutely right, and looks very much like my own right hand technique on my EUB - so am I doing it all wrong? Sorry to hear that the pianist is no longer with us, clearly you've lost a talented musical colleague there.

Thanks for posting that video (high quality sound, by the way) in this thread. I'll check the other links out later when I get back from our weekly grocery shopping expedition.

But on Monday, the drummer, guitarist/keyboardist and I (plus another pair of guitarists and our music teacher) will be playing incidental Jazz and stuff for our school's 50th Anniversary evening, so I hope there'll be some more vids.
