Should I encourage this girl to write more songs?

Our singer's first attempt at writing a song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mxVLrSYT7M

Like many 18-year-olds she's pretty shy and it took months to get her to perform this in public. The audience really seems to like it, though. Sure, a few songs got bigger applause that night, but most definitely got less, even though this is one of the slowest and quietest things we played all night.

I know she's got more poems written, maybe they'd be suitable for lyrics. Should she try to come up with some melodies for those lyrics? She can play guitar and piano as well, so she has the tools to bring fairly complete songs to the band. Or is there not enough potential here?

I always say go for it!

BTW... I didn't know the guy from Raiders Of The Lost Ark played bass, I thought he got chopped up by the helicopter!

Just a bit of critisism, please put a shirt on for starters.... and she started the song pretty weakly but she opened up a little bit around the middle of the song, I would say she has potential.....

You should always encourage people to push their limits and develop themselves, imo. Even if things are bleak, they'll get better. Music is not about having potential, but about playing music. If you're having fun, you're doing it right, and you should tell her that.

She does need some work on her vocal technique, and I don't understand the lyrics, but overall it sounds quite nice!

Also, you totally look like Zangief. Cool!

Thanks, good to see positive verdicts so far.

"Go for it" is good advice in general, I'm just hesitant because I know that working on more songs and putting them out in front of the public would be kinda stressful for her... I mean, she's certainly capable of singing more clearly (and does so on other songs), she's being less than clear on purpose because she doesn't really want people to understand her lyrics completely.

Yeah, if she only had my egomaniacal self-confidence, haha.

I didn't understand any of the lyrics. But I think you should encourage her. It sounded nice.

I would prefer to see her in front of you and your bass and your exposed "egomaniacal self-confidence".

+ 1,000,000,000 for wearing a shirt.

She seems to be pretty good, although the crowd wasn't totally captivated...

Heh, that's only mostly my fault. At the beginning of the first set the singers were at the front of the stage and I was wearing a suit jacket, by that point of the third set they migrated to the back and I decided that January in Europe is just too brutally hot. Or something.

Heh. Yeah. That might be the biggest reason to pursue songwriting - the fact that people will be more interested in her songs before she even sings a note.

Also, I couldn't resist adding "On bass is apparently the guy from Raiders Of The Lost Ark who got chopped up by that propeller" to the video description.
