Sorry I just had to get it out. | One of my all time favorites. Lots of fun to play, too. Check out "Goodnight Tonight" also. |

Sorry I just had to get it out. | One of the greatest pop songs ever. There are three hooks in this tune, each of which IMO could have been a top ten hit. And the bass line is amazing. It's sounds great, but you really realize how amazing it is if you try to play it and make it 'feel' like Paul's playing. I have not been able to get even close myself.

I hate to admit it, but today was the first time I ever really got that riff to "Silly Love Songs" right.

The way he melodically moves things is awesome. There's a purpose to his playing- he's not just flurrying stuff out there-
I think he had the earliest "modern" bass tone. Listen to how huge, but still full- the line from "Baby You're A Rich Man" is.

Seriously, "Silly Love Songs" is a great bassline. My other favorite is "Hey, Bulldog".

70's Rickenbacker had a modern tone, too modern that many people hated it at that time.

But now, some controversy--I don't think it's a Ric on the recording, even though he played one onstage during that period. Sounds like a classic Jazz Bass bridge sound. He played a Jazz throughout Band on the Run (if the pictures that came with the album are any indication) and I thought that album contained his best bass work and sound. (I think that was the Beatles' Jazz, too, as it was right handed, played upside down, with the old-style logo and block inlays. There's a pic of George playing it during the Abbey Road sessions. Paul had a left-handed Jazz that appeared during the White Album.) The sound on SLS is comparable to that on Band on the Run.
Anyway, does anyone have definitive proof that's a Ric on the recording, maybe a print interview?
As for "Coming Up" wasn't he playing a Yamaha by then? Can't recall. And I think when I saw him in concert circa 1989 he played a Wal 5-string for a bit.
