Simple free recording software

I'm looking for something super simple and free (or cheap) that I'd be able to use on a netbook without all that much processing power. I use Cubas 5 on my PC, but I'd like to find a program that I could use just as a demo writing tool. Like to import some beats and lay down some bass tracks that I can export as waves if I choose to.

Any such programs that would work with 1 gigabyte of RAM on a netbook?

The only free program I know of would be Audacity, it's simple once you get the hang of it

If Reaper is still around and free, that is the ticket! I can still run it on a PC with 512mb ram and Windows XP! Things don't get hairy until you're running like 8 tracks with effects on...but yeah if you just want to capture some ideas, great, easy to use software.

I think I'm going to give Audacity a go. Runs on Windows 98. Reaper costs a bit. Free version is only for 30 days. Thanks.

I've recorded pretty great demos using Ardour. Free.

My friend uses Audacity. For rough sketches it's actually really good. I'll see if he'll send me a song so you can hear a sample of what it can do.
