Slap line I came up with...

Sign in to disble this ad
Well after 10 months of playing I thought I'd share and see what you guys think, a little slap/pop line I came up with on a whim

Slap line

Thought I'd develop it a bit and maybe add some drums...

Well, IMO I think it would sound better played finger style with a bit of agression, really dig in and funk it hard. Buts thats just my opinion. I've found that when i stumble across something like you have, I write it down and then toy with it for awhile, use different effects, try tapping/slapping or using a pick. See what sounds good or how I can make it sound better.

Bass on brother.

Actually thats interesting, cause I have played it using fingers not slapping/popping and it does sound much more funky. Thanks for your feedback

Yeah it sounds cool but I agree with pantsman. I think it would sound better fingerstyle and really dig in to it. Maybe slide in to a couple notes or something too.

Yeah I know it. I have only recently begun to incorperate slap into my playing and it's so much fun to do when I can actually get my hands to work together on it.

Its actually (at my level anyway) much easier than getting a good groove on. It just takes practice.

What I did was learn RHCP Aeroplane by heart, then just made up various exercises to develop it a bit more. I've only been slapping for a month or so, comes quickly if you stick to it.

I agree with the comments already stated. Just wanted to contribute what my experience learning slap was like. I found that even when I could do it pretty well, it was a while before I was forming slap lines that really grooved. I think that great slap lines are constructed very differently. Think traditional octave slap style, although this is obviously not the only way to do it.

I've been slapping for a while, but only recently have I come to believe that my slap lines are performance worthy. It just takes time.

Well this isnt meant to be a funky/groovy line really... It's a mix of aeroplane and the root notes for hit the road jack (I was playing both songs and after finishing aeroplane I wanted to slap something new and this just popped up in my head).

Its a jazzy slap adaptation I guess you could say. I wasn't really making a song, just discovering new things on my bass

What I did want feedback on though, rather than the usefulness of this line in a song, is on my tone, my timing, and my technique. Any critical comments appreciated, I'd like to improve from this

About this: I am popping the octave of each root note I slap in this line, but I see what you mean

What aa dilemma, I don't want to start a new thread just for this nor do I want to highjack this thread.

However seeing as I am lazy

I'm pretty much in the same boat as Morf only just starting to work on slapping, however i've been a bedroom player (that sounds dodgy lol) for about 1.5years an only really learnt metal and hard rock stuff.

Feedback? am I in the ballpark at least of being funky?

I think both of you guys are doing pretty good. The two of you obviously are enjoying your basses, and the different ways you can play. Try practicing those same licks over and over at different tempo's, using a metronome, or drum machine. It'll help bigtime with keeping you in the pocket.

Pantsman, Thats a nice tone you got goin on there man......

me ... tone!!?? huh?! that there is a bottom of the range yamaha RBX260 (older model without the jazz pickup at the bridge) into a digitech BP50 and into my soundcard, recorded using freeware mp3 software. However I guess it does the job but I'd be happy to accept an amp from anyone who willing to donate, i've had a trace elliot 1518 cab for a year now and still no amp.

But yeah, I have a drum machine, I really need to force myself to use it more. Set it slow and really work on note lengths and more important rest duration and such, figure out dotted notes.

Well, You don't need the best of the best to get a decent tone. Whatever it is you're using is letting the sound of the bass come through without much modification. Most of the time, that's a good thing. What strings are you using?

That was cool. I liked the use of harmonics too. Not bad for 1.5 years of being a bedroom rocker. Keep up the good work and keep pushing yourself toward excellence.

Bass on brother.
I was thinking the same. I guess that a thicker fingerstyle tone could fit better.
