| Galaxie 500 may be the best band ever, and the album to listen to is their first, On Fire. There's not a bad tune on that one (and Naomi Yang's bass playing is simply fantastic). Radar Bros. is also a good band, but I think they have gone a bit too Beach Boys-y and psychedelic on their latest few records. Again, their first, and self titled, album is their best.
Then there's:
- Spain (The Blue Moods of Spain is the album to search for. The others are incredibly plain. Oh, and the bassist/singer/songwriter of Spain is a Josh Haden, son of a certain well known jazz bassist.)
- The For Carnation (Their self titled album from 2000 is a very good one.)
Some more recent bands that may not qualify as slowcore, but still play very good, moody songs slowly are:
- Audrey (A Swedish band that's just released their debut album, [i]Visible Forms[/i.].)
- The Clientele (A brilliant british band that has a hint of Galaxie 500 in their sound.)
Still, in my mind, no band does the slow, moody and quiet thing better than Yo La Tengo (especially on And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out and Painful). And as a bonus, they sometimes indulge in a distorted racket as well. A great, great band. |
