Hey guys - I thought it was time I shared some of this great footage I have of an entire clinic given by Dominique Di Piazza in France a year or so ago - he plays loads of great stuff - but this is a total burn out in a Django guitar style - it's a a bit OTT but then Dom knows how to have fun too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFTFZwIhVDQ
Hope everyone is good out there in bass land - I just moved house and practicing a lot so I thought I'd share some proper bass player's work while I'm taking some time off from gigging and all that.
Hope you dig the vid

I like watching Bireli Lagrene do stuff like that. I just don't like how it translates to bass. When I hear a bass solo, I want to hear stuff that is unique to bass. He's amazing, just not my thing. |

I mean, some of the scales and tones I was hearing were really great and matched the "feel" that I got from the background music (granted, just a root and fifth thing) and I was diggin' it.
But THEN,
Every 10 seconds he goes into some weird scale that doesn't even fit at all and IMO sounds like crap.
So that's 50/50. |

So that's 50/50. | It's called playing 'outside' and far from sounding 'crap' it's a way of stretching a basic three chord harmony (or any chord for that matter) into a huge realm of other possibilities. Agreed it doesn't always sound 'pleasant' - the idea is to create tension, so that means finding uncomfortable or jarring dissonances in the harmony then resolving them. The word 'crap' is just a little inappropriate and ignorant to describe this - though if you don't like that's cool, it's not the bass law that you have to like ALL bass playing styles - there are some I don't like either - Dom D P is pure class in most styles and this is him just freaking out for a bit of fun - it's not about scoring points - it's just music.

Check out John McLaughlin's Que Alegria CD to hear Dominique at his best. (IMO) |

His bass playing really demonstrates his guitar playing chops. Even though it's not the kind of bass playing I'm used to hearing, I still think it's pretty amazing stuff.
I have a CD of Dom playing with Dennis Chambers called "Front Page". That's some pretty nice stuff. Front Page
Thanks for posting that video.
Check out Dominique Di Piazza's website.
There are some really great sound samples in the downloads section of his website.

Dom's a great player in so many ways, this is just him going a bit mental - the McLaughlin Que Alegria album is wonderful, a real classic, and I even have a bootleg of an early 90s gig with him playing a Fender jazz fretless and still doing some wicked stuff on it - aside from the mad technique I wish I had half of his harmonic knowledge - the guy is deep on that level for sure - he's also one of the sweetest human beings you'll ever meet, a warm and friendly guy.
Also - Yes - he does use a thumb pick.
Cheers

M | I think it's a little harsh to be calling me ignorant because I don't like it. When I said it sounds like crap I meant: "it sounds like crap to me, as a person, purely subjective." If you're calling me ignorant because of my opinions about music I'd have nothing further to do with ya.
And if you say you weren't calling me ignorant only the word "crap," what word would you prefer?
Jeez.

He can do other stuff too, and be more melodic and slow. This looks like a speed demo during a bass clinic. Maybe someone made an inocuous remark about thumb-picking being slow | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
