Before seeing this I had not noticed how much Tom plays electric "upright" style.

Is that from the Drummer's Collective DVD, kind of looks like it. There is some stuff on that DVD with Victor Wooten and Steve Smith that is dam scary.

Tom Kennedy is one of the amazing player today. Gary Meek's sax playing is hot too.

Go here and see his album credits and hear some of his playing:
http://music.barnesandnoble.com/sear...R=140429&SIG=A

I like his solo on the tune "Skipper" he plays with the Dave Weckl Band on the Perpetual Motion album. I don't see it listed on the Barnes and Noble website, but I did find it on iTunes.

Enjoy,
Joe

If you want to study under him, enroll at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, he is an adjunct instructor on the Music faculty there. Several of his students teach at a local music store, and they are all monsters too.

I had to get a plug in for my employer!

That's the kind of bass playing that will either make you quit playing, or go home and practice more...

I'm not sure what I'm going to do as yet...

Candidly, I've always liked Tom's bass tone and chops on all the Weckl CDs.

You took the words out of my mouth! I had been GAS-ing over a new Cirrus I saw yesterday when I saw that clip. Before it even finished, I was going "why are you worried about another bass, you still won't be anywhere near that!"

It almost makes me embarrassed to be seen with a bass on the campus where he works, even if he is there only part time.

There's a great video of "the Chicken" out there as well. I love that tone. I have Bartolini's in my bass amd I roll to my bridge pup and hope for the best. The tone is OK, not a Fodera, but in that vein. Of course I play nothing like Tom Kennedy, either. I use it for "smooth jazz" type gigs.

Do you know where we can find that video?

It's on the Drummers Collective and Bass day 2003 Video - Weckl and band do a three song set - there's some great bass playing on it - plus you get Wooten and Patitiucci live (not together) on the same disk - it's well worth buying.

2Disc DVD

love Kennedy's playing - he uses that rollling triplet pull-off thing so well he's one of the few burning solo bassists who really solos below the 12th fret - to me he sounds like a tenor sax player when he's at full speed - and his tone is stunning. I can get a little tired of his style sometimes as each solo sounds quite similar - BUT - he is a monster and I am planning on 'attempting' to transcribe some of his stuff - he's one of my fave jazz players at the moment.

WOW!
GFAB333, I know what you mean.
I knew I should have taken lessons from Tom when I had the chance many, many, moons ago. I've had the pleasure of seeing him play locally a couple of times in the past.
Well, maybe old dogs can learn new tricks....I'm not dead yet.

If you are in the St. Louis area, Tommy's protoge, Zeb Briskovich (who is a TBer but doesn't post much) now teaches most of Tommy's regular students, since Tommy is on the road so much.

Zeb is a stunning player (EB and DB) and from what I understand, he is a great teacher. He would be THE cat to study with IMO if you are in the St. Louis/Southern Ill. area.

Zeb has a lot of Tommy's sense of time and harmonic sophistication.... but stays away from the 64th notes... which is a good thing IMO!

What's really cool is that Zeb Briskovitch is a former student of mine - in World History!

This particular solo leaves me cold. Great dexterity but no musical statement. His opening phrase is cool but then it sounds like wiggling fingers, really fast wiggling fingers.

His walking, on the other hand, swings. I have seen Tom play much better than this.

I agree he's quite a player but that solo was jive. Piano and saxophone solos were terrific.
