So I woke up this morning, dragged myself to work and opened Itunes to see if Stanley, Marcus and Victors album titled Thunder would actually be available.
And it was! Usually Itunes is a little behind on releases but not this time!
Let the downloads begin!
Peace,
Gerry

Bummer...
Enjoy!

I'm downloading it now, though I much prefer Amazon and their DRM-free, 256kbps MP3 format. Plus, the entire album download is only $8.99.
ETA: Amazon MP3 - SMV Thunder

First impressions: Not wankery at all. In fact, I'd say that this is a very well put together album. On first listen, I find that I particularly enjoy Mongoose Walk and Los Tres Hermanos. There is a bit of bass hero stuff too, such as the jam track Classical Thump, but it is quite limited.
I'm more a fan of Marcus individually than I am of this collaboration, however, if you like any or all of the three, I think it's definitely a worthwhile purchase.
I'm planning to see them on August 17th. |

I wish they had used more live drums instead of programmed drums that sound like a demo. And sometimes it sounded like they had a hard time making three basses fit on a song, understandably, especially because none of them play expended range basses.
I'm a fan of Victor, but I have to say that Marcus Miller is the man. Don't really like Stanley, besides his upright playing.
Two stars.

Of course there has to be a distinction between all the bassists so Marcus has accepted being the 'slap' guy while Clarke and Wooten dance around him. Stanley slaps a little as does Vic but it's mostly Marcus. As for the drum machine thing, who cares?! Stop nit picking about every little detail. Every 'bass led' record involves all sorts of wankery! Get over it! |

If not for just having an open mind, at least for the historic aspect! These are 3 of the most creative innovators of the instrument and for them to be playing together in the same room is priceless! I hope they come by my way again! |

No disrespect to any of these players, who are individually great, but I found most of the tracks on Thunder pretty tiresome. Wooten in particular sounds out of place and resorts to a lot of his trademark right-hand licks in an attempt to fill up space.
It's OK if you're just listening to it for the chops, but it's more wankery than music IMO. These guys definitely could have benefitted from some sparser arrangements.

I still get the feeling that the live show would have really been impressive, and I think that if all things were equal, I would've went. But, I'll tell ya, if Brian Bromberg had a solo or "multiple bassist" type show, I would've been more interested in that and might've made it happen.
I prefer fingerstyle, by leaps and bounds. Bummer, I really wanted to love this album. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
