Finally got hold of a copy of It's A Beautiful Life by Freebass, Peter Hook's and Mani (of the Stone Roses) side project (Andy Rourke not being in the band now).
I'm pretty surprised and also pretty disappointed at the same time. The multi-bass basslines seem to work pretty well, and there are some absolutely brilliant tracks on it, but the vocals aren't brilliant in some places and sometimes just annoying. The basslines in some places also remind me a little too much of New Order.
It's still proof that Peter Hook is an amazing bassist though.

I can't wait to see him play live in December!!!

Andy I believe just couldn't commit to it, and Mani had a bit of a breakdown and lost his temper with Hooky and said some really nasty stuff, but has since apologised and they're still friends.
Right now Peter Hook's band is called The Light, and they will be touring the US very soon doing a tribute to Unknown Pleasures

Any news on what New Order are doing at the moment?

Peter has The Light, and for live performances I think his son is playing a lot of bass so Hooky can concentrate on vocals.

The Freebass album however, wasn't great. For me the defining sound of NO was Hooky. Electronic (Barney & Johnny Marr) were very good, although sound rather dated now, & Revenge were just awesome live :-)
Is it just me or do JD still sound fresh - not dated at all? | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
