So I'm liking Alt. Country a lot more these days.........

Sign in to disble this ad
Especially Alt. Country by Wilco, Son Volt, Ryan Adams, Blue Rodeo etc etc.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZfoopfNqPA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRnoh86FD2A

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97IT0-EDTtw

I don't quite understand when this happened - I used to hate any kind of country music, but I'm liking this stuff with the country root and a modern twist.

Any good recommendations for me to give a listen to ????

I'm with ya, Wilco and Ryan Adams are some of favorite artist making music these days! A lot of what they call alt-country these days is more country than the country music on CMT.

although it has country liek tendencies reminiscent of guys liek johny cash and john prine, i think ryan adams and wilco have a lot more alternative rock and folk qualities to them whihc make them a lot mroe enjoyable people to people like you and me over more mainstream modern country, which i cant stand.

i really think ryan adams has more country like tendencies in his music than wilco do, i just think they get grouped together alot because jeff tweedy writes lyrics in a similar way to how ryan adams does.

wilco is one of my favorite bands around right now.

if you want to hear some cool unsigned alt country check otu my brothers band on myspace, Patrick King and hsi designated drivers.

www.myspace.com/patkingdd

he is a great young songwriter, not just a shameless plug for my brother.

i LOVE alt-country......check out Blue Mountain, the Hilltops, and Whiskeytown (ryan adams)......

My favorite music DVD I own is the old Son Volt lineup on Austin City Limits.. Whiskytown's "Strangers Almanac" is also a must own alt country CD..

although not quite alt country my newest favorite band is Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.......check 'em out.

My current project is pretty well alt.country - really alt.country.r&b

Some other greats:
Robert Earl Keen

Steve Earl

Joe Ely

Fred Eaglesmith

Greg Brown

I'd be inclined to consider The Subdudes in the genre, as well, though they do much more...

Anything by Cracker. They really were at the forefront of this style, kind of an almagamation of rock & americana & country - and most of their records are excellent IMO. David Lowry is a great songwriter.

I've been pretty much playimg Blues most of my life. But I did get into a couple of country bands in the early 90's 'cause there were no Blues gigs around here at the time. My parents were sort of Country musicians but not strictly. My dad listened to a lot of Hank Williams...so I had heard a fair amount of it growing up. Couldn't stand it, either. But when I was playing it in the early 90's, the band I got into was doing a lot of the Bakersfield-style Country by Dwight Yoakam as well as some Marty Stuart and some Kentucky Headhunters and Lee Roy Parnell too. I kinda figured it wasn't really mainstream as it was more rock 'n' roll oriented.
But now, I hardly listen to any Country but that may change 'cause I really like Brad Paisley. That dude can REALLY play and that's what's getting my ear. I know, not really Alt Country but maybe close... But I'm looking into what his best cd is now so I can start there. Big article on him along with interview in Vintage Guitar mag a few months back. Pretty cool dude... )-(

GP&TN is a very rockin' band - even better live than on the records. Grace Potter writes well, can sing just about anything and plays a freakin' Hammond!. Plus she has great stage presence and sex appeal. The band is tight too. I first saw them at the Iron Horse in Northampton in the fall of 2006 and was blown away - that night the bass player, Brian Dondero, played most of a very funky 2nd set on a Krusty Kay upright. They've since gone in a more mainstream rock direction with the "This is Somewhere" record but they still bring plenty of rootsy blues and funk to their live shows.

I have a radio show on a non commercial radio station in central west New jersey. What I say to start my show is that "I play alt-country and maybe sometime during the next three hours we'll figure out what that is...." I mix it up quite a bit I'll play Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Wille Nelson and I'll play EmmyLou Harris, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Buddy Miller and I'll play Townes Van Zandt, Gram Parsons, and Gillian Welch, Richard Buckner, and Whiskeytown, Uncle Tupelo, Blue Mountain, and The Waco Brothers, The Bottle Rockets, Bobby Bare Jr, and The Knitters, The Blasters, Los Lobos, and Ryan Adams, Alejandro Escovedo, Neko Case and The Drive By Truckers, Wilco, Son Volt, and then throw in The Beatles to Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, The Replacements to Yo Yo Ma, Hazmat Modine (great tuba bass player) to The Band.

So what the hell is Alt Country?

I'm a big Uncle Tupelo fan. I missed their final concert because I was broke and lacked transportation. So I'm an alt country fan, too.

I have to give a shameless recommendation to the alt-country (albeit, decidedly dark) band for whom my friend played bass - Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots:

Myspace site (Check out "Amen Corner").

No one's mentioned Lyle Lovett yet. He's had a great career, and I especially like his "Joshua Judges Ruth" album.

Great Stuff

Drive by Truckers is where it’s at. Those guys can write.
The Jayhawks play some good quality alt country.
Slobberbone is has some nice rock/country.
Supersuckers and Ween have both put out great country albums that deal with drugs and girls. It is interesting to hear rock bands put their spin on country.
