I always figured it was a late night inspiration - 3:34 or 3:35 am.

From the Chicago website :

"In between tour dates in August 1969, Chicago had found the time to record its second album. One of the first songs Lamm brought in for the album was "25 Or 6 To 4," a song with a lyric Chicago fans have pondered ever since. What does that title mean? "It's just a reference to the time of day," says Lamm. As for the lyric: "The song is about writing a song. It's not mystical."

Although from the lyrics - it's obviously about a drug trip :

"Staring blindly into space
Getting up to splash my face
Wanting just to stay awake
Wondering how much I can take
Should I try to do some more
25 or 6 to 4 "

How much clearer can you make it?

If it was about time, shouldn't it be 25 or 7 to 4? On an analog clock, 25 minutes until the hour (35 minutes past the hour) means the minute hand is pointing at the number 7.

The story I remember reading is that it was inspired by a train schedule... the train left at 25 minutes or 6 minutes to 4 o'clock, or maybe 25 minutes or 26 minutes to 4..... don't quite remember, but pretty sure that was the inspiration for the tune. I remember the interview quite well.

I think the interpretation is that it's "25 minutes or 26 minutes until 4:00".

Well I've heard a remake of "Lets go do the hop" converted to "Lets go smoke some pot." That one is pretty obvious.

Danny and the Juniors would be horrified. If any of them are still alive, that is!

You're right... because the original version is so deep.

I've been listening to that song since the late '60s and never thought to ask.. good question.

They were a bit stuck on "time" on that album, weren't they? Remember, there was also "does anybody know what time it is?"

so here's the real question on that tune - what is the chord the horns hit at the very end of the song?

Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is was off their first album, 25 or 6 to 4 was on the next one.

Yeah, maybe they found time an interesting subject for songs.

I heard in an interview years ago that it was very late at night (actually just a little past 3:30 ) and he was very tired.

Yeah and why was he up so late - why couldn't he sleep ...

It was all about drug trips in those days!!

So - go on a trip and write a song about it - applies to a huge number of hit singles at the time!

What an awesome band. Too bad Cetera ruined it in the 80s.
