Another thread made me think..I don't know what prog rock is in 2008!

I'm an old duffer. I listened to a bit of Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Genesis, Hawkwind and Renaissance back in the day, , all well and good, but now I/m kind of a blues -folk -reggae roots kind of guy.

There seems to be a lot of folks who say they are into prog rock here on the site...What's that mean these days?

Give me some tips on some bands and I'll fire up napster and give'em a listen. Maybe not too metal ?

Tool might be too metal for you, but check out their album Lateralus anyway.

Yeah I'd suggest Tool too, they're hard to classify but they were influenced a lot by King Crimson. Also Lateralus is a great album.

Check Out Umphrey's McGee. They are a bit of a jamband live but are very dedicated to song-craft, and breaking free of typical ABAB song structures.

On the metal side there is an instrumental band I like a lot called Pelican. You should check them out as well

You might like Procupine Tree, the Mars Volta, or 3 (actual band name).

warwick.hoy beat me to it, but Umphrey's came to mind. I've seen them called "improg" (improvisational prog rock).

If you download some of their stuff, look for live stuff.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, although they can drift into metallic territory. Sometimes their bass player plays a horizontal bass instrument that's like 8 feet long... so cool. Don't know if its something he made, or a commercial instrument.

Dream Theater? They're at least newer than King Crimson.

Dream Theater, anyone?

They are a bit metal, though, particularly their later stuff (2002-present).

I trust you checked out Gentle Giant back in the day. Ray Shulman is one impressive bassist. The bass line of the title track on Three Friends is nothing short of amazing, one of the longest lines I've heard in popular music.

I still listen to prog now and then, mostly old school. Still impresed by the young 'uns already mentioned here - don't foget Coheed & Cambria!

Duh, forgot about Dream Theater. It's more neo-prog, but very progressive nonetheless.

+1 for Porcupine Tree.

Start with their older stuff, like The Sky Moves Sideways. It's a little more Floyd, and a little less heavy.

Fantastic music.

+1 for 3. They've got a new(ish) album out, and it's phenomenal. They also have lots of percussion, so you know it's prog.

I suppose that's basically true, but the Crims put out what could be their best album only a few years ago. Check out The Power To Believe sometime.

I'm going to add Deerhoof to the mix. Pretty much prog-pop, but a lot of the songs on The Runners Four and Friend Opportunity walk into prog territory with very little effort.

Planet X. They're instrumental though.

And Rush is still the leaders of today's Progressive Rock. They have been for the last 30 years.

I would have to agree that Tool is as progressive now as King Crimson was back in the 70s. I might also add Circus Maximus, Sun Caged, Meshuggah (yes, experimental, extreme metal and very progressive), OSI is great, Amplifier, Oceanside, Opeth (yes, prog), Gordian Knot, Trey Gunn.

I love prog rock.
