Another thread made me think..I don't know what prog rock is in 2008!
I'm an old duffer. I listened to a bit of Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Genesis, Hawkwind and Renaissance back in the day, , all well and good, but now I/m kind of a blues -folk -reggae roots kind of guy.
There seems to be a lot of folks who say they are into prog rock here on the site...What's that mean these days?
Give me some tips on some bands and I'll fire up napster and give'em a listen. Maybe not too metal ? |

On the metal side there is an instrumental band I like a lot called Pelican. You should check them out as well |

If you download some of their stuff, look for live stuff.

Sometimes their bass player plays a horizontal bass instrument that's like 8 feet long... so cool. Don't know if its something he made, or a commercial instrument.

They are a bit metal, though, particularly their later stuff (2002-present).

I still listen to prog now and then, mostly old school. Still impresed by the young 'uns already mentioned here - don't foget Coheed & Cambria!

Start with their older stuff, like The Sky Moves Sideways. It's a little more Floyd, and a little less heavy.
Fantastic music. |

I'm going to add Deerhoof to the mix. Pretty much prog-pop, but a lot of the songs on The Runners Four and Friend Opportunity walk into prog territory with very little effort.

And Rush is still the leaders of today's Progressive Rock. They have been for the last 30 years.

I might also add Circus Maximus, Sun Caged, Meshuggah (yes, experimental, extreme metal and very progressive), OSI is great, Amplifier, Oceanside, Opeth (yes, prog), Gordian Knot, Trey Gunn.
I love prog rock. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
