My personal opinion is that they model perfectly everything that rock should be these days. They aren't big headed, they have plenty of influence but it's still fresh, there's so much variety in their songs, the lyrics are amazing, the playing is incredible, and they practically cater to the fans. I saw them in Seattle, and it was amazing. One of the things that stood out to me was in the end of Spinning in the Daffodils, JPJ played what was essentially a glorified piano recital, and the crowd went NUTS. And this is a crowd of some of the most hardcore rock fans (Nirvana [and in Seattle no less], Zeppelin, QOTSA, FF). THAT'S what music is about.

I'm ecstatic to hear they are putting out another album this year. I'm definitely making the trip over to Seattle again.

I love the album, took quite a few listens to 'get it' bu now it's there it's killer. My only gripe is that JPJ isn't as clear as I would like, but the mix is quite odd in that it's never 100% clear if we're hearing guitar, mandolin, slide bass etc. Ultimately I think this works in it's favour.

I was lucky enough to see them at Hammersmith a couple of months back. There was a bit between songs where Josh introduced the band members. I have never heard anything quite like the reaction to the announcement of JPJ. Truly incredible. Nice to see a bass man getting the recognition he deserves!

I find it's good but I think it's a little overated. Well not overated, but just that josh hommes is very underated. He should go down as the influencial person in rock of the 2000's. I mean can anyone mention a band that spanned the decade as well as he has.

I think it's really good, not AWESOME, but still really good. I am a huge QOTSA fan and I really like Zep and Foos too, so I had high expectations for this. It's not mindblowing like maybe I wanted it to be, but it's still better than most of the new rock I hear.

Great album. It's nice to hear an album that actually sounds like a group effort and not one star with a back up band. Great writing with some very cool change-ups. Like was said before, with one of the greatest bassists in rock history onboard, his bass lines should be right in your face and not buried. It took me a few listens to really enjoy it, but now it get played ALOT!

pretty good album/band, now if only that would lead to more mainstream people catching on to all the OTHER really great "similar" rock bands out there. There really are a lot of bands doing stuff that has a lot in common with TCV and yeah, they are all pretty popular in terms of "underground success," but it would be cool to see some more of these bands seeing the light of day from slightly more mainstream outlets.

wait, what am I saying, the "mainstream outlets" like Rolling Stone (and the people that still learn about music from those outlets) are so out of touch with what's going on with ROCK music that I doubt it would even help if other ROCK bands started getting press again. it's all about celebrity status and who is schmoozing who.

Again, TCV is pretty good, but honestly there are a lot of similar bands that rock more, write better songs, and are even more experimental that real rock fans that don't just piss and moan about the good ol' days would rather spend their time listening to and supporting... they just don't have guys from famous pop bands in them.

sorry for the scatterbrained post

I dig it. Best thing since Songs for the Deaf. Not quite as good IMO, but JPJ (and that 8 string lap steel/bass) are killin' it on this record.

Checked out the album after reading another thread on it here; expected them to be the second coming.

I guess I'm missing what everyone else is hearing but it is little more than overrated claptrap to me. Kyuss' first album was better than this ****.

I think it's great. Better than most of the Foo Fighters stuff. JPJ is still the man.

I really wanted to like it. I came away underwhelmed and I just don't like the guys voice. I bought "Songs for the Deaf" when it came out and it was the same feeling.

I too wanted to like it. I downloaded the most popular tune (at the time) from iTunes. It was OK, not great. I didn't care for the singer either.
Based on the clips, all the songs sound very similar. I wasn't compelled to buy the rest of it.

fwiw, I've gone back and sampled the clips several times after threads like this one, as recently as a couple minute ago. I'm still not hearing the 'variety' that some claim.
