Solo Bass albums please!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi!
I work at a music-shop selling jazz, and today a customer wanted to buy records with solo bass performances, no band. Preferably contemporary music or modern jazz, upright or electric. Anyone have any recommendations for me, so I can please my customer next time he comes by?
Thanks!

Michael Manring- Soliloquy

The BEST solo bass album. I've never heard any argument to the contrary. Seriously. It's that good.

Elegant Punk by Jonas Hellborg is a stunning example of a solo bass album, and AFAIK it may even be the first. Good luck finding it in your shop though. It cost me an arm and a leg to get hold of.

if you can track down any Dos (bass-only duets between Kira Roessler [ex-Black Flag] and Mike Watt [Minutemen/fIREHOSE]) it is worth it. some originals mixed in with some standards and jazzy sort of explorations. just the two of them riffing/talking on bass. good stuff.

Dave Holland has some great solo DB albums. I dig the CD called "Ones All".

Miroslav Vitous' 'Emergence'. And my vote for Manring's 'Soliloquy'.

This is a little bit off topic but your client (or anyone here!) just might be interested as well. It's called "L'orchestre de contrebasses". It's not solo bass performances but a band of DBs instead. Here goes a link from youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BzaF9TAFlI
