I have the same t-shirt as Ed. That's about all we have in common. Sure wish I had his chops. (Sigh...)

Great playing! I always enjoy hearing Ed, playing or talking...
The bass however is not in tune, probably needs intonation setup.

He's using FX, including chorus.

I was there to see that in person. Ed's an amazing player, and has a top notch bass face going on in parts there.

Watch the beginning of the video - the first part, no FX there. The note G on the D string is a bit flat, to my ears anyway. Of course I could be wrong.

Ed is a great player. That video re-affirms that I love finger-style bass playing, slap/pop annoys the hell out of me.

P.S. Pick-style sounds cool to me also.

dumb technique question. When he start doing pops around 6:30, is he using both his index and middle fingers on the right hand? Index on the D string and middle on the G? Just want to confirm what I *think* I'm seeing.

/rick

ps yeah, I really enjoyed that clip too

Sweet. I may have to get a looper so I can work on that piece. Seems like way too much fun not to.

Ed, will you discuss the looper thingy a bit. Drum machine too?

Me too--me and my buddy Doug (of the Lakland Owners Group) set this up with the help of Ed and the good folks at the Bass Emporium. I was the one sitting/standing by the camera.

Ed put on a clinic for a good 90 minutes-2 hours. As expected, his playing was great and he was a very cool cat.

Thanks for the comments. The clinic was a while ago, but I remember feeling pretty good about the event, so I'm glad some of it is getting online.

I used to do a lot of looping gigs about 6 years ago. I had a fairly elaborate signal chain, but it allowed me to play live with a drum machine and create full sounding arrangements. I've always used the Boss RC loopers... nothing fancy by today's standard, but they had reasonably good sound quality compared to others. But it was always a single loop track. I never got into layering multiple loops. Guys like Steve Lawson have made the looping thing an artform... I just pile on a bunch of stuff until I've got something interesting to solo over.

I rarely do it anymore, but for a clinic... it's about all the wow factor I can muster by myself. I am not really a solo bassist and while I admire guys that can do that, I guess I need some kind of energetic exchange to make something happen.

Anyway... thanks for posting this, and thanks for the nice comments. And it's quite possible a string was flat... hey, who the hell can hear that low? <kidding, I'm kidding!>

Hello Ed,

I just want to tell you how much I enjoy your product reviews. I like how you stick to the facts and let the sound of the equipment do a lot of the talking. Having all those video reviews in one place is a great resource for checking out gear. Thank you!!!

Yes RickC you are correct. He teaches that method on his videos,
