Besides Parliament-Funkadelic, Sly and the Family Stone, Graham Central Station and Red Hot Chili Peppers whats some awesome funk bands? I'm just getting into funk but its quickly becoming one of my fav genres and I wanna hear some more funky basslines. Larry Graham and Bootsy Collins blow my mind. |

| | | The Meters is the first that comes to mind other than the people you mention. George Porter Jr is a groove-master. Support New Orleans! |

Funk, Punk, Ska, Metal mashup galore... and one of my favorite bands, if not THE favorite!!!

They're both kind of new school funk, but still good. I assume you've already heard of James Brown, especially the JB's from the early 70's. Brand New Heavies have a couple of good funk albums too. |

| | | | People on this board have great taste. I've liked all these bands so far. And yea I know about James Brown- he's really hit or miss with me some of his songs I love others I can't stand. |

| | | | Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters isn't on the list. It's more complicated funk I would say.
Robert Palmer's first album is funky (The Meters are the backing band for half the album, Little Feat for the other half).
Garage a Trois (not really for its bass, but it's funky, Charlie Hunter plays guitar and bass) Its too weird for some people. |

Chic (more disco than funk, but very funky anyway)
Banbarra
Funkadelic
Isaac Hayes (blaxploitation funk at its finest)
Jimmy McGriff
The Commodores (early stuff)
The Temptations (late stuff)
The Acid Jazz label spawned a whole genre of jazz funk that got labelled acid jazz after the label:
Brand New Heavies
Goldbug
Snowboy
Corduroy
De La Soul
Galliano
Groove Collective
Incognito
Saint Germain
Soulive
Squarepusher
Young Disciples
Mother Earth (awesome bass player Neil Corcoran)
Jamiroquai
James Taylor Quartet
The biggest Aussie act in this vein was Directions In Groove.
Some new acts that are funk/soul/hiphop in nature that are awesome are Erykah Badu, Leela James, Joss Stone and Maxwell.
I don't know if I would call any or all of these latter acts funk, but they are definitely funky and worth a listen!
