There was a time when Funkadelic was the more 'guitar/Rock-oriented' brand of Funk.
Parliament was the horn/Soul-keys brand of Funk.

I guess, eventually, both began touring & performing together & P-Funk resulted(?).

Get your hands on Jamiroquai - The Return Of The Space Cowboy. It's not exactly funk, per se, but it is definitely dirty funky.

More Bootsyisms, Bubbah!

A couple of "Must-Haves" ...

There are some excellent suggestions in this thread but here are a couple of "must-haves."

Slave has been mentioned more than once. This is the CD you want:

Stellar funk: The Best of Slave
Pay special note to "Snap Shot" and "Weak in the Knees." Nasty grooves!

_____________

Also, Tower of Power is a necessity. (Anyone who is serious about Funk needs to spend some time listeining to Rocco Prestia!) Choosing a "best" selection from their catalog is tough but this one is an excellent starting point:

Soul Vaccination LIVE
This is one of the best sounding live recordings I have ever heard. The mix is so hot that it practically grabs you by the throat!

Good Stuff here, but one album you must listen to above all else is

MAGGOT BRAIN

by Funkadelic. Free Your Mind and Yor Ass will Follow is good too, those are good if you're a big hard-rock fan. But Maggot Brain is an Album everyone should own. For the title track alone at least.
