Some noodling on a vamp...

Sign in to disble this ad
After taking a break for a while (due to becoming a father,) I picked up the bass again a few weeks ago and tried to purge my brain of this riff that had been rattling around in there for a while.

I tired to wear it out, so it would finally leave my brain for a bit. I don't know if I succeeded or not, but here it is, for anyone interested.

2 or 3 bass tracks and a guitar track, along with some ACID drums. Bass is an American Hamer with a 2TEK and active Duncans and D'addario Pro-Steels, if anyone's curious.

Hope you enjoy it.

Best Wishes

Not my style, but it's good for sure. Production isn't all that great, but it's a cool jam.

I'm mostly reply to ask what "a vamp" is, never heard that term.

Vamp = Behringer Vamp (the POD-like FX processor/amp simulator) ? Right?

I think it's really good! Good groove, fun. You played the guitar parts, too? Funky and tasty.

And regarding production -- It think it's pretty darned good (I presume it's a home studio PC recording or similar). It's at least better than a lot of the myspace type music one can find.

Thanks for the compliments and opinions!

I've always considered the term, "vamp" as: a repeated riff or couple-bar phrase repeated (usually at the beginning of a song) to set the groove.

I'd forgotten about the Behringer rig thing. Bass for this was recorded direct to the Korg D-12 recorder I have. The guitar was through a Tech 21 TRIAC preamp to the same recorder.

I'm got plenty of work left to do as a bass player, much less an enigineer thanks again for your thoughts!

Actually, a "vamp" can be ANYWHERE in a song . . .

as in your example "vamp 'til ready" could be repeating a 2-bar riff until the vocal enters. OR, that same "vamp 'til ready" could be a 2-bar riff in the MIDDLE of a song, waiting for the vocal to come back in. OR,that same "vamp 'til ready" could be used to tie together SEVERAL SONGS into a medley (or "popurri"). Another use of the "vamp" is at the end of a song, repeating ("vamping out") while fading out the volume.

BTW, nice groove . . . .

Very cool! It reminds me of a sitcom theme song or something!

Once again, thanks!

For grins, I put up a couple "jam along" versions, if anyone wants to take a spin. (I think it was in "E" at 440)

Should be not too much of a challenge to improve on the original! Hope someone gets some use out of it!
