SOMEONE FINALLY DID IT! (AJFA BASS REAL REMASTER)

Sign in to disble this ad
Yes, someone fixed it. This is Jason playing for real (sounds plenty like him to me...)

Blackened: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAvwod7BBK0

And Justice For All: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWgEe...eature=related

And if you read the comments on his video, he explains how he did it.

NO, these are not the Lokire ones (no offence man you're job was great) but these are actually Jason himself playing.

as i thought- it wasn't his bass + amp setup, or his playing style to blame- they just turned down his track in the mix!

This is from the video game Rock Band. If you buy the download content, they both have the original bass in them. It's a real treat to hear it... Jason's tone is great! Metallica simply just turned the bass down in the original release. I would love to see Metallica re-issue AJFA with the bass turned up. AJFA is my favorite Metallica album but the mixes are so poor that it's hard to listen to. IMO Harmonix did a great job re-mastering the song in Rock Band

+1 on the reissue!

Do you guys think the reason for the mix being the way it was had anything to do with Cliff's passing? Or was that an unrelated production thing.

I think the songwriting is some of their best, but I was always cranky about the mix, and never fully enjoyed the record.

An excerpt form playboy 4/2001 interview w/ Metallica.

.....PLAYBOY: Jason, as time went on, did the band stop hazing you?
NEWSTED: They actually got tougher as time went on. The second and third years were the most brutal. Instead of fraternity pranks, there were things that cut deep and were based on disrespect.
PLAYBOY: What did they do that was disrespectful?
NEWSTED: Turning the bass down on And Justice For All. Not listening to my ideas, musically.
PLAYBOY: Is Jason even on And Justice For All?
HETFIELD: His picture is on it [big laugh]. Someone sent me a joke CD, with a sticker on the outside that says, "And Justice For All - now with bass!"
ULRICH: It's the only record of ours that I'm not entirely comfortable with. It became about ability and almost athletics, rahter than music..........

.......PLAYBOY: Tell me about the first year with them.
NEWSTED: Hazing. And a lot of emotional tests.
HETFIELD: We were mourning through anger. "You're here instead of Cliff, so here's what you get."It was therapy for us.
NEWSTED: One time, it's four in the morning, they're hammered and knocking on my hotel door when we were in New York. "Get up, ******! It's time to drink *****!" You know? "You're in Metallica now! You better open that ****** door!" They kept pounding. Kaboom! The door frame shreds, and the door comes flying in. And they go, "You should have answered the door, *****!" They grab the mattress and flip it over with me on it. They put the chairs, the desk, the TV stand - everything in the room - on top of the mattress. They threw my clothes, my cassette tapes, my shoes out the window. Shaving cream all over the mirrors, toothpaste everywhere. Just devastation. They go running out the door, "Welcome to the band, dude!"
PLAYBOY: Did you know they were telling people you were gay?
NEWSTED: No. I mean, dude, there was so much, that's like a minor detail.
PLAYBOY: Why did they do that and why did you put up with it?
NEWSTED: Because it was Metallica, it was my dream come true, man. I was defintely frustrated, fed up and kind of feeling unliked. They did it so see if I could handle it. If you're going to fill the shoes of Cliff Burton, you have to be resilient..........

Rest of the interview can be found at: (Page 9 has them going back and forth, over side projects)

Not being able to hear the bass parts is the main reason I can't listen to AJFA to this day! Newsted's parts would've made that album perfect, judging by the two songs posted.

what bass did he use? I remember ESP credited on the album liner notes, but someone mentioned a Steinberger- the tone matches up- very piano-like.

re. the game Rock Band, did they do new mixes from the master multitrack of AJFA to feature there?

I wouldn't be surprised if Metallica pulls an Ozzy and has the bass parts on everything Jason played on re-recorded to get him out of the royalty loop.

Aww man, what a thought. I don't think Bob Daisley was too thrilled when Ozzy did that.

Would just be another reason to hate Metallica.

Don't get me wrong, I dig the music... I just hate Metallica.

Whoa...Just found some new (more) respect for Newsted. That's great although I think that recording has the bass up just a bit too much (if there is such a thing?).

sounds like the Alembic here- hollow and very wiry.

C'mon, I mean, are we even sure that these are actually Newstead's recordings?
They might be Trujllo.Of course sounds like the parts are played via the pick.

on the original album, you can hear the bass, only just, in the title track And justice for all in a few spots (eg. the intro when the drums come in)- the tone and playing matches these new versions.

Wow!!! AJFA has always been my favorite Metallica album... and now I like that much more. (It was my fav because it was the first one I bought). I think the bass is just a touch too loud in these mixes (the crunch is softened), but they prove the point that Newsted was ROBBED on this recording.

Jason Newsted is one the reasons I decided to play bass in the first place. My life changed the night I saw Metallica on the AJFA tour, at Red Rocks. I had never seen anyone do what I saw Jason doing. In 1993, I was lucky enough to have a backstage pass to the Metallica show (with Suicidal Tendencies & Candlebox). Jason was the only member of the band to take the time to talk with the fans in the meet and greet area. The rest of the band just waved from their trailer. I got to talk with him far about 5 minutes, and it was plainly obvious that he is genuinely a cool person. He was more than happy to answer my questions about the basses he was playing that night (Wal 5-string). He never once acted like he was "better" than any of the fans he was talking to.

That's really badass. I'm glad someone figured that out. It actually makes me mad that his bass was never audible in the first place.
