Someone tell me the best way to tune for "For the love of money" by the O'jays

Ive never been able to play this, and bygolly, Im going to play it over and over untill i get it. Seems like hes using a lot of open strings. How does he have his bass tuned ? That little pic groove, is hard to get down for some reason.

I remember this keyboard player, picking up my bass 6 years ago, and playing it like its nothing. I couldnt get it. I was so imbarassed.

How am I going to live up to my name, if I cant learn this groove ?

To the best of my knowledge, it was just standard EADG. That's where I learned it on. I'm pretty convinced it was more fretted notes than open. Do a search on "Ghost Notes". You'll have it down in no time.

If I'm not mistaken, the riff itself is 3 notes, but as stated, a lot of ghost notes. Look into it.

Its those ghost notes that make the whole lick groove. Its getting those ghost notes just right with the pic.

Is it in E ? Seems like its a lower note than that. I was using my 5 string, and I think I was hiting the d on the B string

maybe he did drop D tuning for that song.

I remember I was 12 years old in '74 when that song first came out.

Im using a line 6 modulation pro to get my phaser

Once you get For The Love Of Money locked down, try the riff found in Poppy Girls from Quincy Jones' The Wiz soundtrack...Same immaculate tone and technique on a variation of the O'Jays groove, with some great support from Steve Gadd.
